    What G-shock really stands for

G stands for what you say when you first see the watch; as in, "Gee, that's a really neat looking watch." Shock is what you feel when you see the price tag on the watch.

    Hi DQ,

well, the shock isn't always that big... I paid less than $10,- for this DW-5600C shipped...

A nice heavy vintage watch. I think if you look around good, you will find nice affordable G's around (check our sponsors for instance).

    Cheers,

    Sjors

Very nice find, Sjors. My post was meant as a joke, of course...but I'll definitely keep an eye on your sponsors now that you brought that to my attention.

    Hi DQ,

off course I knew it was a joke, but I wanted to let you know that G-Shock's are not per se expensive digitals. I think for most basic models you get a lot of watch for your money. I'm not petting mine exactly and they stay pretty good. My Timexes were scratched all over in no time...

    Cheers,

    Sjors

Yes, I've found that watches with raised edges and a mineral crystal are very resistant to scratching, such as my Shock Resistant Ironman. That is one of the things that appeals to me with the G-shock. However, I have a couple of non-G-shock Casios (a ProTrek and a Calculator), and they are both far more succeptable to scratching than any Timex I've ever owned. I've noticed that the Expeditions tend to fare much better in resisting scratches than the Forresters do. There is definitely no denying the pop culture status of the G-shock. I can't wait until I find the right one for me.

I do really like the classic look of that watch, but I think that $41 is just a little steep even new for that watch. I'm sure Casio could produce those and price them at $29.99, and they'd still make a healthy profit, when you consider they sell this (which is WR100M) for only $24.95 MSRP:

Even still, I think Sjors got a steal on his. $20 used is about right, I would think.
