I think it’s all about contrast. White on black is as good as black on white, although the white dial is more noticeable for a bystander than the more stealth black dail.

As Sjors mentions, as long as there is sufficient contrast, both should work equally well. I may give a slight edge to white hands on black background, at least to my eye, but that may be a trifling difference.

«They found that combinations with positive polarity resulted in better performance (that is dark text on light background), and, as with studies mentioned previously, the greater the contrast between color combinations the better the performance.»
White on black and black on white should be about same in daylight but in dimmer light white dial and black hands should be better.
In case of illuminated dials like you have in the car/airplane black background and "white" digits makes sense since it more comfortable in the night.
    It should be special!

My vote for ultimate visibility (especially in low light) is white dial and black hands, but for cool looks (which to me is just as important) I fancy black dial with white hands.

My personal favorites in this regard are the GWG1000-1A3, GWG1000-RD4 and the GPW1000T-1A.

Without lume, white dials are always easier to read in low light.

The opposite is true in strong sunlight, because white dials reflect light and cause glare.

I find both colorways perfectly readable if:
    - the hands are not too skinny
    - the hands are long enough to reach the indexes

in both categories Casio is guilty of messing it up on some models! ;)

The white dial option is much less common the the black dial version.
Some comparable models from my collection!

I agree that its all about contrast. But I am partial to lighter dial color. With no lighting aid, I found my white dial watches readable all the times except for in complete darkness.

These are my analogs and I'd say black face/white hands wins legibility test, aesthetic test way more subjective

I prefer the White face with black hands but it really doesn't matter.
