    Question Why so cheap? GD100MS-1

So I bought my first G in oh about 15 years last week. Once upon a time I had the old school model Black Riseman. Loved that rugged as watch (although I did find the pressure based altimeter wildly innacurate, but then I live in NZ which is a small island country with heaps of coast, therefore lots of weather and rapid weather and pressure changes). Anyhoo I ended up grabbing a GD100MS-1. I love it; long life battery, cool red/orange display with matching red led lite, nice chunky case with round form factor, basically it's cool and I'm happy. I am curious to know though why this watch is so cheap. The price I got it for was = $98USD and is one of the very cheapest models I could find here. I know it's not a Frogman or anything but is this model any 'less' of a watch then other G's? I mean is the shock proofing less on low end models or are there missing features to justify the cost?

Basically I'm just curious, I love this watch and will be wearing from now on (well at least until my wedding anniversary when my dear wife will give me a SKX007....drool). Any idea/opinions/facts would be much appreciated.

    Oh and merry xmas/holidays people

The GD100 series is my pick for "Best Bang For Your Buck" and the comfort level is supreme. They are top sellers as well. Enjoy!

Don´t worry, I own one and can tell you it´s a great and high quality watch. The module is pretty basic, that´s sure, and maybe is what makes it cheap. In G-shock cases, "cheap" is far from "poor". For the record, I got mine for 89USD shipped. Far from regrets here. Congrats.

i got the same one for $60 on ebay. it is by NO MEANS a "cheap" or "lesser quality" g-shock. just a simple one.

but i agree, for the price, its a huge bang for your buck. 7 year battery, best LED of any G, cool design, comfortable and light, and high customizability. everyone should have at least one.

I've seen used ones in great shape sell for $42-$56 (in USA), which is seriously tempting. I agree it has very basic functionality, but often that's all you need. I've settled for even less functionality, going back some years to screw-back metal case G-Shocks like the GL-110 and G-2000. They're so rugged, well built, and visually appealing that it makes up for having only 1 alarm (versus 5 on most basic G-Shocks today).

GD-100's have 5 alarms, hourly signal, CDT, stopwatch, auto el, 2099 auto-calendar, and 48 cities world-time. it's not a "simple" module, just not an extravagant one.

I think xevious was referring to the GL-110 and G-2000. On a side note, the features of the GD-100 are standard for a huge majority of G-Shocks; of course it is not simple when compared to most other watches out there, though. With its standard/basic features, I prefer to think of the GD-100 series as the new "ubiquitous" G (maybe an Everyman G?) in spirit of the 6900. Not surprisingly, they are selling very well and a lot of special editions have been released. Still can't figure out why I haven't gotten myself at least one.

... and scrollable 4 time zones from the home screen. Very handy if you travel a lot. This is not a simple module at all. The digit size is big. The backlight is very bright. I used it as a desk clock when I was on a field work.

Never heard about that feature before. You may have just sold me a GD-100!

Well I already felt great about my purchase, now I feel even more so. Thanks guys for confirming my thoughts about this, perhaps, under-recognised or under appreciated G. I'm pretty comfortable saying that you won't be dissapointed if you grab one GTR83 especially given the price.
