    Is it a “franken” if....

So topic of de jour for me...I am considering picking up a val 88. Some of the ones I see online are in better shape than others but I see nothing that is in excellent shape IMHO.

So I have thought about picking it up, sending to a watchmaker to spruce up the case, service it if necessary and then have a new (enamel) dial and hands put in-

Given that the 88 is essentially an ebauche,
Would this then be a Franken if I had such work done.

If it was an original zenith or omega, this would be off the table.

    Curious on opinions. Thanks.

I say this in all seriousness--if it were a "franken" what difference would it make to YOU? If you didn't care, then why would you place greater concern about what folks here thought over your own concerns? It is just like the threads asking whether watch "A" is too dressy/casual/big for whatever situation/wrist/need you have. Just about no one ever notices your watch anyway, and for those that do--does it really matter what they think? In the end for all of these--it just doesn't matter--if you like it, do it.

Re: Is it a “franken” if....

short answer; yes, it's a franken (replacing the original dial with a different dial).
That said, it's neither good nor bad, it's just is; taking out an original (major, essential) part and putting in a different one is the very definition of a franken.

The good and bad of it, in my opinion, is the reason/motive and what you do with it. You want to restore/preserved an older movement by giving it a new dial and hands, etc, I think that's a great idea, I would definitely support that.

You put together a watch from different parts and tried to pass it off as all original, well, that's not good.

The term itself, to me, is neutral - it just tells a state of a watch (or anything that is put together from different parts).

I think this comes from the not infrequent situation when a franken watch is sold on as original....

A "mod" is a franken you like. As long as it's not done for the purpose of deception, I think you're golden.

To me the line between “refurbished” and “Franken” is a fine one. If you enjoy looking at the final outcome what the heck does it matter if it’s technically a Frank or not?
