10 watch collection for only 10K?

My good friend and I recently attended the Wind-Up Watch Fair in San Francisco. We had an awesome time... Everyone was very amenable, welcoming and downright cool. While driving back to Northern CA, my buddy and I were talking.

“What’s your 3 watch collection?” he asked.

    “What’s my budget?” I replied.

    “NO BUDGET!” he shouted.

We had fun discussing the various Pateks, vintage Rolex, APs we would run out and buy.. but the question left me uneasy so we settled on a $200k fictional budget. Patek Philippe Moonphase grand compli..etc… Nautilus 71bla bla, maybe a Daytona for everyday wear.. This fictional scenario wasn’t THAT entertaining. Maybe because it was so out of the realm of possibility? I’m not sure.

He sensed my frustration and flipped the tables on the conversation... “OK what’s your Ten watch collection for only $10,000?” That question had us going for quite some time!

So, what is your 10 watch collection for only 10K? Factoring in second hand prices is acceptable. I’d love to hear your responses.

Well ...you will need a Rlx. A preowned Sub is about as essential as you can get ..with a date, I prefer. I have a Certina, which is a fantastic watch for under $500. There are others in the < $2000 range that are very nice too: Union Glashutte, Eterna, Longines - Hydroconquest is nice, etc. that could nicely pad the remainder.

Personally 10 for 10K is pushing it if you want a balanced up-to-down collection. I, personally fit 10K for maybe an 8K + 2K watch set. Seems one 6K to 8K would just have to fit into this.
IWC Portuguese Vintage Hand Wound (stainless) - IWC Portuguese Vintage Hand Wound (white 18K) - Rolex Yachtmaster - Tag Heuer Limited Edition DiCaprio Aquaracer (Blue) - Edox Grand Ocean Day/Date - Eterna Kontiki Diver (Black) - Longines Hydroconquest (Black, Red bezel) - Certina DS Action (Black) - Victorinox Limited Edition 125th Anniversary Jubilee (Red), Collection State: Happily closed.

Pretty much my collection, all bought used except the Eco-Drive:
a $14K rose gold Ball Flying Scotsman that I got for $3K,
a first gen Ball Fireman that I got for $750,
two first gen Ball Voyager GMT PRs that I got for an average of $1K each (retail $3K each),
an Oris TT1 blue dial for $500 (retail $1K+),
    a brass Carpenter M11 at $500 (retail $700),
a couple of brass TC-9 pilots at $150 each (retail $400 each),
    a Citizen Eco-Drive at $200,
and an old quartz Seiko, $100.

Total cash outlay: A bit over $7000, with original retail "value" at $23K+.
And really, I don't need (or use) all of these, with a couple in the middle range being prepared to sell at this very moment.

And not a Rolex among them...

"Only" 10k? I mean, that's a hell of a lot of money.. Used to have a 10 watch collection worth ~2k or so for years and I was happy..

Anyways, for 10k€ I would get:

    PAM111, ~4k€ used
Alpina Alpiner 4 Chrono, 1.5k€ used
    Limes Endurance, 900€
    Davosa Argonautic GMT, 700€ used
Nivrel Coeur de la Sarre, 500€ used
    Poljot P3133 chrono, 350€
Vratislavia Conceptum Pan-Africa or Royal Europe, 350€
    Maranez Layan, 300€
+ two more for what's left of the budget..

10 for $10k? If they're balanced financially, you'll just get F71's Greatest Hits (oris, sinn, damasko, stowa, etc.).

Otherwise, you'll get people picking up 3-4 nice preowned watches and filling up the remainder with vintage seikos, casios and cheap digitals.

Being my usual awkward self I’d just get a Sub and not bother with the other 9.

Because the quality/value is similar in watches in the $500-1,500/2,000 range , IMHO, you have lots of options.

I would probably get some nice Mido COSC's, some JDM diver stuff, some nice German watches, and for used a GS Quartz, or Breitling SQ, etc, and maybe something vintage Omega.
