    2nd Watch...now want a chronograph!

    Hi guys, so I am expanding my collection (currently own a hamilton jazzmaster) to a chronograph watch. These have always been something of a fascination to me and I am excited to start the search for my second watch.

    However, I know nothing about the actual chronograph portion/what I need to look for. My hamilton is automatic and I love is, is that what is preferred in the chronograph world, or is quartz okay. Furthermore, I want this watch to be less of a "dress" watch than the jazzmaster. I want reliable lum (the hamilton's lum is garbage), but still would like to keep a sapphire crystal as I am a little careless on the occasion. A hardex will not be the end of me, but I would prefer a higher quality glass.

    If you guys have any suggestions of some good chronographs under $400 ish, I would love to see them/do more research. I tried to look, but there are just too many choices. Not sure whether I want a black face or a white face, my hamilton has a white face, I might want to switch it up to a black!

    I might be wrong but for $400.00, I think that your options would most likely be limited to Quartz Chronograph watches. Nothing wrong with Quartz, even though I personally prefer Mechanical watches. My suggestion would be to check out the Tissot range of Chronograph watches.

    I am sure the lume will not disappoint you. Sapphire crystal and a robust swiss quartz

    Is there a major difference between quartz chronos and automatics?

    The same sorts of differences between quartz and mechanical 3 hand watches. Some people prefer quartz, some mechanical watches, I am the latter. At your price point most chronos will be quartz, there are some Chinese mechanical chronographs in your price range and you can check the affordable and Chinese watch sub forum. Many are homage watches which I personally am not a fan of. If I wanted a mechanical chronograph for under $400 my choice would be a Seagull 1963, tons of information on the different modern versions of this watch on the forum.

    Edit note the Seagull I mentioned is a hand wind movement.

    The same difference as between 3 hand mechanical and Quartz watches, except that mechanical chronographs are more expensive to service.

    Only in terms of pricing. Quartz watches are a lot cheaper than Mechanical watches, be they manual-wind or automatic self-winding. Quartz watches tend to be more accurate.

    Hey ya... you got 2 options:

    1. Within your budget, you may go for some nice Chronographs in Quartz - LIke a Tissot PRS516, Victorinox Chrono, etc.
    2. You may get some chronographs (automatics) - pre-owned but in good condition. Keep an eye on the e-bay.

    Personally, I'd always suggest to go for an automatic. That's where you can actually appreciate the quality of watch making with it's precision.

    Quartz = Technology

    Mechanical = Horology
