Advice please on a decent chronograph for around £3k GBP

    Hi all

I am looking at several models, from several manufacturers. Below is the shortlist, as well as my doubts about each:

Breitling Chronomat Evolution (new/old stock) - Starting to look a little dated?
Omega Speedmaster (new, and probably with the saphire caseback/possibly moonphase) - Have never found this to be the most interesting looking watch...
Tag Heuer Carrera (new) - More of a fashion brand? Also a little dull looking?
Longines Master Collection (new with moonphase) - Is this in the same league as all of the above?

Your input would be much appreciated. I am off to climb Mount Everest in about 2 weeks for charity, so this will be a little reward upon my return!

    Thanks in advance
    Colin

For that kinda dough you can get an IWC Portofino chrono on a leather strap. It's a much better brand than all three you mentioned, too.

The Speedy (Pro) is the most loved watch on this forum - not by me though - I find it a bit bull. The moonphase model is more interesting.

    TAG isn't a fashion brand - they're a watchmaker. I like my cv2010.

I find the Longines to be too busy.

    As always...buy what you like!

I would snatch your hand off for the Longines Master but the Omega is probably the better watch. The TAG is no slouch either, they are all fine watches and what it comes down to is which of the 3 you like best. I get the impression that you are rooting for the Longines. If so, go for it.

The Breitling is dated, gigantic and houses a Valjoux 7750, the Carrera, for better or worse, is a Seiko chronograph (of which some parts are still sourced), the Longines is incredibly busy and houses an ETA 2894/1. I'd toss all of them out now. If you are going to spend that kind of coin, I'd want something a bit more significant under the hood (though if I had to choose from those three, at least Tag is the most impressive of the lot, and not outright using outsourced movements).

Of your choices that leaves you with a SM, which is certainly a nice looking piece and if you nab one with the calibre 9300, you aren't doing bad at all.

However for my money, I'd look into zenith. At that price point you have a lot of el Primero options, if you don't mind dealing with a grey market seller (guys like ashford.com have a nice reputation) you could grab a great looking chrono with some exceptional importance inside the case. A win-win in my opinion.

Maybe a preowned IWC Portuguese Chronograph? Or perhaps a preowned Zenith El Primero 36k (comes on both bracelet and leather)?

Good luck with the climb :)

If it were me, I would be looking in one of two places:

    Omega Speedmaster (preferably sapphire sandwich)
    Zenith El Primero

I am currently saving for the former, after strongly considering the latter...

If I were in your shoes, which I'm obviously not, I would pick the SM in a heartbeat. The other choices you have opted don't do anything for me. By the way, have you considered a POC? Great looking watch...!

    Edit: Mount Everest...Touching the void...Near space...Speedmaster!!!

The old Chronomat (especially EVO) is a coveted Breitling, does not look dated, and is not gigantic (43mm). However unless you buy used, there is no way you will find one under your budget. Of your choices for a new watch I think the Carrera chronograph looks best. I would take a good look at the 1887 series. Best of luck
