    Albert Hoffman and Basel

It was an odd experience for me hearing the name of Basel, Switzerland, mentioned on the radio, after having just learned of its existence (and having never heard it pronounced) only recently as part of my new-found fascination with mechanical watches and from frequenting WUS. And now here it is in a completely different context - the site of the discovery, by Albert Hoffman, of LSD.

He died yesterday, in a town near Basel called Burg im Leimental. He

    Basel: art metropolis

Besides watches and inventors, Basel is known as a great city for art--maybe the world's leading city for modern art. It's site of the world's leading fair for modern art, ArtBasel. And it has some great museums, including the Kunsthalle, the Kunstmuseum, and the Museum für Gegenwartskunst. So, if you're there, save some time from your watch-shopping schedule for the museums and art galleries.

Thanks for the tip! Maybe I'll get to go there someday.

Re: Albert Hoffman. Many years ago (27) when I was a Uni studying Dentistry, one of the courses we had were chemistry/pharmaceutics. We were told that Dr Hoffman used LSD frequently on a recreational basis. And he died age 102. I must have missed something !
