    Aluminum oxynitride (transparent aluminum)

I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about this material. I wonder how it would compare against acrylic and sapphire for making watch crystals. It's a type of ceramic.

85% as hard as Sapphire, less transparent, and 10x the cost? Not worth bothering with for watch parts, as they don't need its superior infrared or UV transparency.

While it's not quite as hard, in my quick googling it seems like it's used as a ballistic material, so it might have a place on ultra-rugged watches.

You do realize that sapphire (a particular arrangement of aluminum oxide) is just as much transparent aluminum as this?

Hmm... seems like it's tougher than sapphire. Interesting, so it'll scratch a little more but not shatter as easily.

Also, I was wrong about the cost... it's a little cheaper than sapphire.

The word "aluminum" is the only appeal this had for me. The only thing interesting about it. The fact that it is in reality more like sapphire/ceramic seems like it would not make it a good material.

I still think acrylic/plexiglass is better because it's properties are a lot more like metal than glass.

Dude, you're attempting to ruin a good nerd thread with intelligence and sense. We'll have none of that!
