Am I Watch Collecting or Hoarding?

Somehow I ended up watching hoarders with my wife. I was talking about how I don't understand how anyone could just accumulate stuff they don't use. She pointed out that I have so many watch straps that I recently had to buy a case. She continued to point to my tower of watch boxes which I don't wear often. It was hard to argue at that point.

At what point would you consider your hobby collecting....and others would consider it hoarding?

Do you collect impulsively or have a very regimented acquisition list?

    The problem in question:

Basically, if I NEVER wear it, it's hoarding.

Whenever my girlfriend calls me out on how many watches I have, I direct her to her shoe closet.

Also, you'd be the most tidy hoarder ever.

Re: Am I Watch Collecting or Hoarding?

If your watches climb onto the roof of your townhouse and urinate into the neighbor's air conditioner,* then you're hoarding.

But really, I think that if each watch has a purpose, or fills a particular category, or if the watches follow a theme, then it's collecting. If it's just a bunch of watches without any organization (putting them into cases and on winders doesn't count), then it's hoarding.

*true story; happened at a house around the corner from where I live...

I have dozens of timepieces, but they all get wrist time. Never bought a watch just to keep it in its box, which I'd consider hoarding, especially when done multiple times.
Some days it's just not worth chewing through the restraints

I bought several watches in attempt to supplement the want for the watch i really wanted and in the end I got it and sold or gave away the majority of my collection so what i learned was there is really no substitute for the watch or watches you really want.

Re: Am I Watch Collecting or Hoarding?

Prior to the strap case I had them all in a reusable shopping bag on my dining table... along with my watch tools, rubber mat, etc.

As for the watches, each watch has a box... and those boxes are strewn throughout the house so as not to raise suspicion. I'm sure suspicions have been raised a long time ago. I'm going to keep telling myself I'm collecting until I'm forced to consolidate.

Re: Am I Watch Collecting or Hoarding?

Technically speaking. There is no difference between collecting and hoarding.

It's simply the degree of impairment.

The only difference between somebody who is insane and eccentric is the eccentric person is successful.

Floyd Mayweather has an obscene amount of watches most of which he can't possibly wear. He's a "collector" apparently. Not a hoarder. Because he's not impaired to our knowledge.

If the watches impair your normal functioning in life. If you are suffering because of your watch collecting, then you have become a hoarder.
