Any kinetic or auto-quartz watches with a smooth sweeping hand??

I read about this swatch auto quartz that apparently has a "low power" mode 4 bps second hand, and started wondering on why seiko kinetics only beat once a second. Are there any such watches or was that just a mistake??

Low power modes are usually beat once per X seconds. Are you sure it was 4 bps? Not familiar with that Swatch.
edit: I think I found what you were referring to:
    http://www.pmwf.com/Watches/Swatch/F...isplayBack.htm
it does suggest it beats 4 bps when power reserve is low.
    Also saw this post:
    http://bdwf.net/forum/showthread.php?t=39517
which says it beats once every 4 seconds.

The Bulova Precisionist series has smooth second hand, although it's quartz not auto-quartz.

You read wrong. Low power is one tick per four seconds. Think of it logically: why would a low power mode go from one tick per second, using less power, to four BPS, increasing power usage?

AFAIK there isnt an auto quartz with a sweep second. Unless Bulova comes out with an automatic winding mechanism for the Precisionist, I doubt there is going to be one from someone else.

There IS auto quartz with a sweep seconds hand, but it's only through a loop hole:

So you can buy one of the Seiko Kinetic Chronographs, some of which beat fast enough to give a smooth seconds hand, and let it run. The issue with kinetics in particular is that they're not really efficient at power generation, so they would like to avoid using techniques that require more energy.

@Michael . I thought the normal beat rate would be around 10bps on that swatch.Guess not :( @ Citizen M : do you know any such variants??

Well, I don't know the beat rates of all Seiko kinetic chronographs off hand, but any of the nicer ones will beat at 4 or 5 bps. The one in the video is an Arctura, but it's based on the more popular (and attractive) Sportura.

    Here's the popular Sportura variant:

    Here's another one:

I'm not sure if you SHOULD leave the chronograph running all the time on a watch that's known to have a relatively short power reserve, but it's the only thing I can think of that meets your needs.

    I think I found such a watch :
Spring Drive | SEIKO WATCH CORPORATION

Unless that's just Seiko-talk for an ordinary mechanical watch?
If not, looks pretty much perfect. Now,if only they made it in black.........

For that movement you will be paying several thousands of dollars.

A spring drive is its own thing....it's totally mechanical except for the escapement, which is replaced by a quartz-regulated tri-synchro regulator. But it is the smoothest sweep hand ever made. The only issue there is spring drives are quite expensive because they're offered only on high-end Seikos. The cheapest one is about $3300 after discount, but it is available in black:

These are discontinued, but still in stock in some places, so if you want it, go get it soon. The discount should be pretty good on these. They used to make a more affordable line, just called "Spring Drive" but that was discontinued years ago and are hard to find now. Finally, you can get a Grand Seiko, but that can be extremely expensive, more like $5000ish after discount.
