I agree with the poster that said Hamilton. For well under a grand, they have very nice watches close to your examples.

Some of the posters here suggested watches well over $1k - Not really sure why.

    Good luck with your search!!

lol yeah, you will have that. Like I said above, I really like Hamilton but they just don't rub me the right way for some unexplainable reason. Plus, I like the more unheard of brand of watches.

You should also check out the Stowa Airman and the Debaufre Nav-B:

    http://www.debaufre.com/content/view/318/213/

Both are simple, well made watches that cost much less than $1000. I don't know if you have a size preference, but the Stowa is 40mm and the Debaufre is either 44mm or 48mm, depending on model. Fliegers seem to be getting more popular right now, so it seems like every company makes one. That makes you a lucky person, if you like the style.

Dang, I have looked at the Stowa's before, but wow... I really like some of those.

What is the ETA 28724-2 movement? I see you can upgrade to 2824, but I'd prefer to keep it as cheap as possible? As I have said, I had an Aristo, would Stowa be comparable?
