AP Leo Messi versus Patek 5726a - help me decide please

Sorry if this is not the correct place to post. I am looking for that one special watch for my 40th birthday. I like both of these watches but can not decide. One is the AP Leo Messi limited edition in steel. The other is the patek 5726a. I have people pushing me both ways. I am looking to wear it every day and at formal events. Is it just my personal preference? any help is appreciated. Driving myself crazy trying to make this decision. I am not buying it as an investment but obviously want it to retain its value.

I vote Patek.....We have a High End Forum where the High End knowledgeable people are.

I actually really like the AP, even if it is a special edition.

If you are not a lover or user of chronographs, I would not go for the chronograph. And unless AP has their new in-house integrated movement in there I would not get the chronograph. At this level of watch I don't appreciate a modular movement with a third party module for the chronograph function.

Patek is the uncompromising ultimate. There are far fewer of them around. I've owned the AP (a similar model). I'd go for the Patek.

AP, although I am partial because my grandpa has a similar model on a rubber bracelet that I like

Both beautiful watches. I think Patek is a better choice- excellent annual calendar complication, stunning all around execution. Nautilus is one of my favorite Patek lines.
I also think Patek is more versatile - AP looks a bit toolish for formal locations, and neither is suited for swimming or rough activities.

Ultimately dropping this chunk of money - you have to go with what sings to you most - which watch sends shivers down your spine and butterflies in your stomach when on the wrist?

I don't really think either is a formal watch, but personally I'd go for the Patek. Not the biggest fan of the Nautilus (and no longer a fan of the RO), but the Patek at least looks more formal and has a more interesting design (the three subdial chrono is seen so much I'm starting to dislike the look).

The Patek 5726 is the one Nautilus that makes me want a Nautilus. The dial (and case) symmetry is just awesome. Throw in an annual calender and you have a watch lovers dream. I'm more keen on the white dial but would really love to see a blue dial version.

AP ... to me it just looks better, a more balanced design (though I am biased of course, see signature). Plus for the avoidance of any doubt, Calibre 2385, as used in the AP, is NOT a piggyback movement, but rather an integrated column wheel movement with vertical clutch, based on FP 1185 (or Manufacture Blancpain, as it is called nowadays) ...

    Cheers,

Gary makes an excellent point re the movement in the AP. For that kind of coin I would want something a bit 'special'.

Also for 'formal' wear I think the Patek edges out the AP, though i'd want a less sporty model myself (that's just me, however)

I think this one should cost about the same
