Attempt in putting together a watch

I recently had the idea of putting together* a watch as a present for someone. I have no experience whatsoever in this field but I really want to attempt it. *By putting together I mean getting the movement, case, straps and assembling them.

I'm researching on movements now and I have some problems. First of all I couldn't find a reliable supplier for a lot of brands of movements. Esslinger.com and ofrei.com were good but choices were limited. Are there any sites that sell a lot more movements and ships worldwide?

I'm also very attracted towards skeleton movements. I think they look awesome. But the problem is that they are a bit rare. Miyota 8N24 looks good but also too complicated. Piaget movements are amazing but I couldn't find a seller and they look expensive and might not fit in normal cases. Also are there any skeleton-quartz watches?

    My budget is around $300.

    Thanks.

Sorry to be mister negative but I don’t think I’d try it. Happen you’d be better off buying a watch and modding it.

I've wanted to do this as well. I even have a 4R36 movement to start from. Every time I've started looking around at the parts, tools, and info needed I've just stumbled across another complete watch I'd rather have. So far I've been happier to buy other people's work than make my own. Maybe someday.

I know that I'll most likely fail, but I'm not afraid to. I've seen a lot of suggestions of people saying not to but I'll take my chances. Also I want the achievement of actually making the watch. Thanks.

I know that I have much much better chances at buying other people's work, but I want to make it for the sake of making it, this is a gift for someone. I think I have enough time to try on this concept before giving up and buying one. Thanks.

These things are different than the basic model project, I could eat up the budget just getting the tools around.

Good set of Bergeon screwdrivers & sharpener
Bergeon Hand puller / set tool
    Case wrench
    Movement holder
    Loupe, 4X & 10X
    Gasket silicon

I've left a few things out I'm sure but a good work area with lighting is a must. I use a 3X jeweler's lamp, old school fluorescent tube type, a lamp like that really helps with even simple things.

I saw this before and it looks pretty promising! It's not that pricey either, so maybe I can swap out some parts. Thanks!
