Basic question on reference number vs serial number

Pardon my very elementary question, but what is the difference between the ref and serial number of a watch? I have a Hamilton with a tag indicating it is an H70515137, but the number on the back of the watch is H705450. Can anyone explain the difference to this novice?

Welcome to WUS. The dealer or Hamilton would be able to tell you what the two numbers mean and how to decode them.

Usually the short number refers to everything that comes in the watch case, where the longer number includes details such as a strap or bracelet, other goodies in the box, special box and whatnot.

And "Reference" is simply the model number. Ya gotta use a fancy term to make your watch sound fancy, though

As noted, the reference usually encodes for the basic model and then variations with strap/bracelet/other signifiers sometimes coming as the additional element at the end.
Choose a job you love, and you'll never work a day in your life because that field isn't hiring.
