Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Complete Calendar Flyback

Got the chance to buy one of these second hand for 50% of retail.

I have not seen it in person yet but happen across Blancpain boutique and saw other Blancpain chrongraphs (Flyback Speed Command) in black and to tell you the truth they looked really tacky to me. Not the built quality of course but the Rambo look made me thinking. I think even for a diver it could have been more subtle and elegant.

Perhaps this particular model in blue looks more appealing as oppose to black ones I saw. All the complications it features are on one hand nice to have but on the other it makes a dial overcrouded and overwhelming.

I will see it on monday but wanted to hear your opinions about this piece.

One thing that concerns me is the basel and its scratch resistance. Any thoughts ?

    Thank you.

I may be wrong but it appears that the bezel is sapphire crystal, so you should be sweet with that. Again - I might be mistaken.

As for the face, it's a complicated watch so it has a few things to display, and I think BP have done a good job of fitting it all in there. +1 for me.

I really like it, bar the moonphase. I don't like the moonphases with a face on them. It's creepy

I'm not sure just how dear 50% off of retail would be on one of those (perhaps still enough to give one pause to think about what other options are out there - Vacheron Constain Overseas/AP Royal Oak maybe?), but that looks like one sweet watch to me...

The asking is 12500 usd. with additional small discount of couple hundred. On the grey market you can buy new for appx 19 000 usd. I will look at the condition of it and see whether is worth it. I need to see it on my wrist as it is 45 mm which is quite big. That money could buy AP ROO basic chronograph and VC Overseas but not with all these complications Blancpain is delivering. Blancpain I guess is also less common in comparison to AP or VC. I just checked chrono24 and got more than 1000 results for AP RO whereas for Blanc FF only around 100.

I believe that you are correct - about as scratch-resistant as it gets.

'Basel ring'. I like that. This one is sapphire, highly scratch resistant as noted; will show the very few it does collect less than stainless or gold.

You make all the right observations IMO. The blue on this is to me much more appealing than the black. All the complications on this particular model do indeed make the dial over crowded and overwhelming. They will also add a few hundred dollars to servicing costs. When the FF was first introduced, one of the earliest criticisms was (in the second or third version, I believe) the introduction of a date function; it offended the diver purists who actually used this for diving. This version is not a true diver's watch. There are much more subtle and elegant (to use your terms) versions. You should not be drawn to one particular version of one particular watch just because of the price.

You're smart to go try it on first. At 45mm, this is big; great over a wet suit, but maybe not under a dress shirt. The case also has a bowl shape which I don't particularly like. And it has 'Blancpain' boldly embossed in the side, another negative to me.

I suppose one could say that it is 50% off retail for a reason.

If you don't like it, you can sell it to me at 50% off what you paid for it. The check is TOTALLY in the mail.
