Bulova - Precisionist vs. Accutron II

Where's the catch? Quartz in the Accutron II has AFAIK somewhat lower frequency than in the Precisionist and the rated accuracy is lower - 5 sec/month vs. 10 sec/year. Accutron II is also thicker, 12 mm vs 9.3 mm in otherwise comparable models (I'm looking at Surveyor - Langford, both with bracelet). And yet Accutron II is (much) more expensive than comparable Precisionist. Surveyor is $390, Langford $130, both on the Amazon. OK, so the Precisionist is older model, but it's still in the actual Bulova's catalogue, so not out of production or NOS. Is there any advantage of the Accutron II that I'm missing (apart from the looks, which is a matter of taste).

Still ... I'm tempted by the AII, and not at all by the Precisionist. It's design, baby. That, and the fact that one of the models looks quite like the Accutron 214 I wore in the late 70s. Just a touch of nostalgia ....

Re: Bulova - Precisionist vs. Accutron II

First off the new line of Accutron is well as you said new, the precisionist models have been around a while so grey market distribution is much larger and hence pricing has come down over time. When the precisionist line first came out, it was really hard to find one for more than 20-25% off, now there are models well over 50% off.

Secondly the Accutron is Bulova's "premium" line, traditionally maintaining a clearly higher slot competing with Longines and Tag, but this year they decided to redo the entire lineup and brand. They have now brought it closer in price to Bulova by lowering quality and overall components and refocussing on vintage styling and affordable quartz watches that made them quite popular. They do have automatics as well but they are no longer swiss made ETA or Sellita movements with excellend AR coated domed sapphires, instead you get a basic Miyota movement with standard casing and crystal but at less than half the price of what the previous swiss model retailed for.

THe new line is nowhere near the quality of the previous swiss made line of Gemini, Kirkwood etc, but they did what they needed to do to cut the retail by half to attain a bigger market. Is it a good move, well part of me thinks yes, because the tuning fork look and design is solid and a good move, but the pricing still feels high now. They should have maintained the swiss quality and figured out a way to compete with Tissot, this might have been a better move.

At their current retail they arent good value at all IMO as they are too close in price to legit swiss automatics from Tissot and Hamilton and cost more than some solid quartz pieces from them. The tuning fork model making a return is awesome to see, but I would've prefered the quality of the Gemini lineup.

IMO, hard to beat this Eight-handed Precisionist chrono for $232 delivered. Seen photos of it with grey hands as well.

But so many hands! So many numerals! And four nubby appendages as well. If you like busy/toolish this watch has it in spades!

Likely my next purchase after having seen the rose gold version in the proverbial flesh.

Re: Bulova - Precisionist vs. Accutron II

    I handled a PRECISIONIST 98B212 priced at 25% off $799.

it did not feel like a 799 watch. The rotating bezel was loose and literally moved up and down.

it put me off as the rs tile feel was dreadful
