Bulova Sea King whale automatic power reserve?

    Hello,

Does anyone know what duration of power reserve to expect from a 1970 Bulova Sea King whale automatic? I just bought a lovely example, and while it keeps OK time the power reserve is only ~12 hrs. Should I be looking at a service?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Of course you should be looking at service if you buy a 40 year old watch and don't know its service history.

Yes a service is needed to clean out all the old dried oil and replace it with new oil. You should get about 40 hours of reserve after wearing the watch 10 hours a day for several days. You are experiencing the unstated but very common reason that watches are put up for sale. Performance has declined to the point a service is needed. Purchasers of vintage chronographs at seemingly reasonable prices are subsequently stunned at the cost of servicing one of those complex timers.

Post a picture when you get a chance.

Thanks for the info John MS, I was not sure that I should be expecting the same power reserve from a vintage Bulova as my newer watches. I regularly have my watches serviced, so I'll just jet over to my watchmaker. Got the jumbo Sea King whale here last week. It looks good so I'm happy.

Regarding pics, I am on the iPad and am having trouble inserting an image so I just pasted a link below. The ad is still up in the sales corner.

Very cool 1970's diver. Love the whale.
