Buying watch from Europe to USA

    Hi guys,

Just a quick question as i'm sure some have done this. I am buying a used watch from Europe. I am Canadian but coming to my mom's place in Florida for vacation in a few weeks. Instead of sending it to my home and getting nailed with taxes and duty i was thinking of shipping it to my mom's place. Does anyone know the exemption for taxes/duty?

    Thanks

Bumping this up, as I am also curious. Hopefully you get a good answer.

I was thinking of getting a watch in Spain recently and tried to look up what the rates are for new watches and if used watches counted, etc and ultimately just gave up.

From what i gather it is an $800USD tax exemption when shipping something from outside the US to a US address. In Canada, $20!

This info is, to my knowledge correct, in terms of the official rules. What happens in a specific case depends on what has been put on the declaration label, the scrutiny the particular package is placed under, etc.. (i.e. there are many watches that have made it to the US w/o being taxed despite selling for more than $800). Playing by the rules is, in my opinion, the best policy whenever possible, but up to each seller / buyer to decide.

Also, I'm sure you're aware of the potential risk of being hit with Canadian taxes when you return to Canada (depending on the value of the watch).

No duty on watches up to $800. Above that, I believe it's around 4%. Make sure the seller knows the appropriate customs codes and submits the correct paperwork or you'll end up either paying much more (10 or 12%) or with your watch hung up in the customs black hole. Also beware of buying anything with alligator straps. Lots of stories of them getting held in customs and straps destroyed because the seller couldn't show that the hide came from an acceptable source.

My limited experience is free. I bought a handful of new Vostoks (less than $100, each) and a women’s Datejust ($2,000+).

I wasn't charged anything, ever, additionally to my original purchase overseas until my most recent purchase in the fall, there I owed the US government like $87 on a $3,500 purchase.
