Question Can a sapphire crystal tolerate 480 degrees Fahrenheit?

I'm thinking of adding AR coating to some watch crystals. I was told they would have to go in an oven at 200 degrees Celcius or 485 Fahrenheit... I expect that to be no problem at all... But thought I'd ask before I regret it.

    What do you think?

I‘d ask a pro, econorm for example, [email protected]. Usually it is applied by a PVD process

I've heard of a pizza oven with a glass door. This glass is probably much thicker though and coated to withstand 500 degree temps. I don't think an average glass for a drink or a glass plate would survive in a pizza oven though. I wouldn't try it with a watch crystal...

I would take it out of the watch first and don't add any books to the oven.

I would be very surprised if it couldn't handle it easily...BUT with a proviso to handle it carefully when it was hot. I might be tempted to use some parchment paper underneath the crystal. The paper should be fine (it'll have a temp rating) and it would let you lift off the paper with the crystal to set onto something like a silicon trivet. Melting isn't gonna happen...shattering could happen if there's a sharp temperature gradient. (This is why a cold glass baking dish will crack if put directly into a hot oven.)
