Cartier v JLC, or another brand?

I'm considering a rectangular watch - opinions please on the pros and cons of each brand ( or recommend another brand) and should I stretch my budget to purchase an automatic as opposed to Quartz movement?

I love the Cartier Santos, it's a classic. I would absolutely recommend auto vs. quartz

JLC doesn't make quartz Reversos as far as I know. If you're looking in the quartz price range and want a rectangular watch, then the Cartier Tank Solo is the only option among the two brands you mention. I'd suggest that you spend some time researching the two brands on line and, more importantly, trying them on. Only you can decide if a JLC Reverso, most of which are manual winders, or an automatic Cartier like the Tank MC are worth more than 2x the Cartier Quartz.

Can you get a Reverso, even pre-owned, in that price range?

Reverso > Cartier (personal preference, Tank is an excellent watch and has iconic status, but aged way worse than Reverso which is still timeless)
    Mechanical > quartz

Quartz Reversos are usually ladies range (although I could not care less - many "ladies" watches today are classic gentlemens' size). Preowned mechanical Reverso may be tough at your pricepoint though.
