    Casio F-91W

    Salutations,

I just recently pulled the trigger on a Casio F-91W, which I got off Ebay for £6.59 including postage! I think that's the cheapest you can get it in the UK anywhere (correct me if I'm wrong). It's nice to have a super-cheap digital watch again, just like when I was a kid. Plus the unbranded freebie analogue quartz I wear for work has an extremely loud tick which was driving me nuts at night, until I took my brothers advice and shoved it several metres away in the other room. Nice to have a quartz watch that you can just wear and forget about, without any tick-tick-tick sound. Plus the strap can be taken on and off, and isn't integrated into the case. Plus I find myself more and more smelling the strap lol. It has that lovely resiny, chemicaly new watch smell, it's like a poor man's caoutchouc. If I sniff it about 1000 times a day, maybe I can even get high off it!

    Cheers

The ultimate wear and forget watch. I'd like to bet Casio sells more of these than G-Shocks

I have the 50m version, the W-59, cost about £10. It's my most accurate non-atomic quartz and never been worse than +1 second every two months!

What significance? Iconic? Are you serious?

For under £10, how can you go wrong?

As for significance and iconic looks, I would bet that these watches (counting similar models like the w-59 and so on) are one of the most popular watches made going on how many of thee I see on wrists - cheap, reliable, replaceable and a design that is probably recognisable to most people as the 'standard' digital watch.

I am completely serious. The F-91W is known by some as the 'Terrorist Casio', on account of the circuitry often being utilised by insurgents to make bomb timers. That's historically significant in my book.

They are iconic because they are the simplest, cheapest watch of reasonable quality and reliability, and are quintessentially functional. They have provided accurate time keeping to people the world over. It is a watch in it's simplest, most pared back form. Very Bauhaus.

And anyway, the cool kids are wearing them these days. Nuff said.
