    Collection Idea: Automatic + Quartz

After acquiring a Grand Seiko HAQ and being introduced to the world of high-end quartz watches, I have been toying with a new idea.

What about a collection with one "everyday" automatic watch and the rest being Quartz. The advantage is that since quartz are accurate and have "multi-year" power reserve, they will always be ready and available.

So I could wear my automatic daily but when I need a dress or a diver or whatever for a day, I can grab and go.

Great idea? Terrible idea? What do you think?

It's all good mate, whatever takes your fancy. My collection is about 50/50 quartz/automatic. These days I'm mostly wearing quartz for the convenience but occasionally feel the need to go 'old school'. The biggest problem with quartz is that there are fewer very high quality watches to choose from.

I like the idea, it is an interesting and practical approach to collecting watch. I also have a few quartz watches (incl an Edox and a Tag) in my collection and I really like them..

Nope. Wouldn't work. Eventually there would be more autos in the mix. It's how this WIS thing works.

    Whatever works for you.

I have manual, automatics, quartz, and solar powered. The quartz ones...I've made the decision to not replace the battery when they run out.

That does sound like what would happen

It's a matter of preference. I've gotten past the distinction between quartz and automatic - so long as I truly love the watch. Quartz watches are not necessarily inferior to mechanicals/automatics. Get the watches that suit your needs and lifestyle.

My collection has 50/50 quartz and automatic, and a single manual. It works for me (although it could just be that I'm subconsciously staying by the limits of my watch box.

Sure, especially if the quartz is something awesome and versatile like the Grand Seiko. A quartz day-date plus some no date handwounds is a good combo. Then an automatic in there that gets either enough wear to stay running or is a special piece you only have to get going once in awhile.

I think it's a great idea to have a quartz, especially if it's HAQ. No need to fanny around setting the time or winding the watch up. Grab 'n' go!

Re: Collection Idea: Automatic + Quartz

I have mostly automatics and a few cheap quartz watches. The problem I find with quartz which some think is an advantage is actually battery life. In the last year 3 of my G-Shocks have died and two of my Hamiltons. Once I used to think of quartz as handy now I find that they are a issue with dealing with changing batteries and in the case of G-Shocks, setting the time again, as every one of them is different.

So now I won't buy quartz again. Too much trouble.
