Conundrum: Hamilton Jazzmaster Slim or Sea-Gull M201S

Hi everyone, I'm having an hard time choosing my first automatic watch.
Requirements: small, thin, auto, and moderately priced. These mostly results in a dress watch, but I want to wear it casually too.

After much mumbling, I've decided that I want it to be have a 2892 movement, and after even more searching, restricted to the two final candidates.

First, the Hamilton 40mm, thanks to fantastic pictures of forumite kibi. But this is not the exact variant I may be getting, more on that later.

Then, the Sea-Gull. This is the version I should be getting, nail bars, supposedly variant "c"

Now for the prices. Best I can find for the Hamilton is $500, with a mesh bracelet, that I don't like at all. So with a new original leather strap, It should be around $620, excluding resell value for the mesh bracelet.
The Sea-Gull, apparently can't be had for less than $345.

So, Sea-Gull is cheaper, and according to the internet sources, 8mm Vs 9mm thick. Hamilton has a nice glass back, the Swiss perceived image, and possibly a little more wearable.

    What you guys think ?

You can have a great looking Sea-Gull dress watch for well under $345. $200 will let you pick from most all choices, you can get a nice one for $150. Check out ebay. 'Trustthehonestman' is a trustworthy seller (lives up to his name). There are several others on there with good reps as well.

To me, if you are going to spend $500 I would look at the stunning Seiko 'Cocktail Time' for $530ish, or if you must have Swiss, look to Freederique Constant with their guilloche dial. A number of Sea-Gull's look similar to the FC though, and one model even has a power reserve.

While the Hamilton is nice, I don't feel it brings enough to the table to justify its price. Either go up to the Seiko or FC depending on your preference, or grab the Sea-Gull and get great bang for your buck.

Seiko SARB 'Cocktail Time' $520 shipped on ebay.

Hi mpalmer, thanks for the suggestions, I've considered these already, and they are too thick, or too elaborate for my taste.

    Seiko SARB: 13.1 mm
Other Sea-gull: too common ST2130 movement, case 10mm or more, and not my style. The M198S would do, but it's even more expensive.

Another that like a lot is the Epos 3420 at 7.7mm, but is doesn't show as readily available, and probably a lot more expensive.

BTW, the ebay seller you mentioned is the one I'm talking to.

I'd pick the Hamilton. The sunburst dial gives it that little extra. I think the Seagull dial is a tad bit too plain looking. The Hamilton has that cool classic vintage feel. Have you considered the Hamilton Intra-matic? It mixes both aesthetic's (Hamilton sunburst with Sea gull dial).

The Seagull has an attractive and well balanced design. The slim hands and markers, minimal case and single sunk white dial give an attractive bauhaus look. The Hamilton has a bit too much going on. Prominent arabic numeral, starburst dial, dauphine hands and markers and a case that looks a bit too big all combine to say too much stuff.

If it has to be one of those two then the Hamilton, although as already mentioned there are better bang per buck watches for this price

WnS, thanks for the suggestion. I've looked all the Orient watches of the world and they are great and a bargain, but too thick for me starting at 11.9mm and more.

About blue dials, Here's the Epos I was referring above.

Even a 3387 would do, but the only accessible one, from, is gold coated, that I don't like.

Just realized, shock and horror, the Jazzmaster doesn't have a seconds hands!

To the OP: How did it turn out? I was in the same exact position and just ordered the M201S.
