Hello everyone. I am looking for a cool looking solar watch. I was thinking about the Tissot t-touch solar but was wondering if anyone had any other recommendations ?
This endedup at the bottom of the thread. I was referring to the Seiko Solar diver chrono at the top.I have one of these and I love it. Picked it up in a online sheriff's property auction for next to nothing as a non-working watch. Put it out in the sun for a couple of hours and it worked like a charm. Great lume.

Cool is very subjective... The brands with the largest/widest range of styles will be Citizen and Seiko. Both make very reputable solar watches at great prices. I have a early Citizen Eco-Drive with a sapphire crystal I got for under $100 used.
I think the Eco-Drive radio controlled world Time is "cool"
It doesn't get much cooler than the Seiko SDGA models. Mine is the Star Wars themed version, but they do un-themed ones too with a playing cards indicating the time rather than Star Wars pics.
Unfortunately not. Sweeping is only mechanical and solar watches are quartz, or at least battery powered, except some casio batteryless ones. The casio batteryless is a cheap digital which means you avoid 'tick tick' second hand, but you have to ask yourself if you want a digital watch.
I guess it would be technically possible to build a solar powered motor for winding the mainspring. But not very practical or useful;-)
Or solar powered motor acting instead of the mainspring (as in electro-mechanical watches).
Much more useful would be a solar powered illumination for an otherwise fully mechanical watch.

I would have thought solar power is efficient enough to move electrons around, but moving electrons to then move cogs and wheels would be harder...anyway once the huge solar flare hits i cant wait for my mechanical iphone!!!
Looking forward to the pics when you buy it OP. Personally I think for those features and solar a Casio is cooler and has more bang for the buck. If the features are the most important than I'd give up the solar and get something truly bada$$ like a Sunnto, or Garmin Fenix 3.
I thought the t-touch was such a awesome design and great looking watch....until I bought one. It went right back in the mail.
Cons.
1. Digital display isn't that great. You can barely read it at angles and one thing that bugged me was that there was no way of having the date and seconds shown together. Also it takes too long to change between the display modes. On the Hamilton flight timer, you just spun the crown. On the t-touch you have to hold the button for 1 second then tap the glass in the middle (I think? I actually forgot if you tap middle of glass or side button now that I try to think about it).
2. That plastic bezel on top (I had the t-touch race or t-race touch, something like that) felt and looked so cheap.
3. The dial and hands are the most boring ones I have ever seen. The hands are so flat and there is not height dimension at all in the dial.
4. It was actually really hard for me to read the time on this watch with the analog aspect. The bottom half doesn't have any easy to read markers since the screen takes up a lot of space. This made it hard to tell exact time when the hour or minute hands were there.
5. It wears pretty big. The thickness doesn't help.
6. The thin watch strap on the larger watch also looked kinda weird.
Pros
1. Cool features. Alarm, timer, count down, lap, split, compass, tides, etc etc.
2. Cool touch sensitive sapphire glass. Unique and fun to use (which you can easily activate it without having to hold the button on the side down first).
I ended up with a Citizen Signature Perpetual Calendar BL1258-53L

Can someone explain to me why the SEIKO SSC081 has a compass that you can move but does not have the actual ability to tell north? It seems to just have the ability to move the dial.

If I remember correctly. Point the hour hand towards the sun, halfway between the hour hand and 12 is South. Rotate the bezel accordingly.
