Which country is the best place to buy a watch?

    Hi guys,

I am going on a trip to Europe soon, and I am considering buying an IWC Portuguese Chrono. I might have the opportunity to stop off in the US also. Countries I am planning on visiting include Italy, France, Spain, Portugal and Switzerland.

So, in your experience, which is the country I may be able to get the best deal from?

Please feel free to post even if the country you suggest is not in my above list.

I've never bought a watch in another country, but as far as I can imagine, the bigger the market, the higher the supply, therefore the lower the price. If I were to wager, I'd say the US is the best place to buy. Pure speculation though.

I don't think that for tourists there is one country where watches are priced better than others. For those of us who pay in USD the best prices on european watches are typically found at home in the USA. The exchange rate as well as any duties imposed by your country may make watches bought in europe very expensive. You should price your watches at home before going and then just shop.
The exchange rate and customs duties couldwill play a big p

I only have one data point to offer, but perhaps it will be helpful. When I was visiting Switzerland last summer, I noticed that the watch prices (like all retail prices there) were quite a bit higher than what I was used to in the U.S. But I didn't go out of my way to look for watches -- those are just my observations from the shops I ran across.

I was in Hong Kong thinking the watches there are cheap considering 50% of world's watch supply goes there, boy I was so wrong!

Buy it from a country that's tax & duty free.

It's actually the opposite; the smaller (read: poorer) the market the lower the prices. This is how the gray market can charge lower prices because they buy in the low price markets to sell to the high price markets. Omega actually sued Costco for sourcing gray market watches and selling them for low prices in their US stores.

    just came back from HK.
retail prices are higher than U.S. and no one offers any discounts on rolex & omega.
Too many guys from China coming into H.K. buying them up.
    was very disappointed.

Are you saying from experience that Dubai is a good place?

Me thinks the closer you are to the middle east, where culturally people welcome a good bargaining, the better chance you have to get -30%, -40% or often more. Combine this with good exchange rate and you wearing it through customs (no import taxes) and I think you have a winner. Bear in mind, this is just guess work - not based on facts.

I think the U.S. is the best place ... but if you're going to be travelling and want a new watch, why not try the duty free shops?

Bigmoviebuff - I'm pretty surprise HK prices would be high, I always thought it would be cheaper there as well ... especially the amount of casinos and gamblers losing their watches in them

that goes the same with South Korea, you would think it's cheaper here, but import and luxury taxes are high - so any luxury items cost more here than in the good ol U.S. of A.
unless you're buying used/pre-owned items ... even then, the small shops here are tuning in to ebay to get their prices
