I'm not so concerned with the price - within reason of course. I'd prefer that whatever watch I wear as a beater can take whatever beating I subject it to. I've had many fine watches (Rolex, Omega, Ulysse Nardin, Kobold, TAG) and have never babied any of them. I am now down to one watch - my Kobold SEAL - and it gets beat up daily and doesn't give up, ever. FWIW, it runs +2 per day.

    Wouldn't spend alot

Life expectancy of most of my daily beaters is 9 months to a year. Need plastic too.

I think Scott has it right. If it is your daily it should be one you don't think too much about when wearing it regardless of price. Some baby their more expensive watches, others are comfortable putting it through it's paces. In that respect you would expect your sport watch to be able to take the abuse.

Life is too short to wear a watch every day that the owner thinks is cheap. What are you saving up to be? I only wear watches I feel are nice. Here's my usual daily beater:

My other thought is, I understand taking care of your watches and all, but part of me also winces when your watch is safe queened after you've spent thousands of dollars. Unless it's a pure collecting thing for you or that watch, wear it!

In th end if you like the watch, price is no obstacle. If it's your Holy Grail watch, it just takes longer to attain!

Re: Daily beater, how much $ will you give?

I agonized over this very question for months. Once I decided that I wanted a really nice automatic, I had to decide between getting a less expensive beater watch or the one I really wanted, an Omega Seamaster.

In the end I decided that life is too short to wait to get what you really want. Plus if I spent $500 on the Blackwater MMT I was looking at, and then later I got the Omega, I would have ended up spending more than if I just bought the Omega now.

I got the Omega and I am not babying it. I wear it everyday. I wrote a little bit about my decision here: http://caferacer99.blogspot.com/2006_12_01_archive.html

I changed my mind after I wrote that and I got the Bond watch instead.

    Yeah sure life is short
    But
Isn't it more nice to have a "less epxnsive" watch daily, and then save the best of evening or "dress" ?
I am not saying not to get the "grail" watch, but do you really want to use it daily and then destroy it?
