Difference between MoonPhase and AM/PM indicator?

I see some watches that seem to have the moonphase indicator, same design and all but I see lots of comments saying it isn't a true moon phase but rather just an AM/PM indicator.
Can someone explain the difference between those two?

The type of AM/PM indicator you are referring to will generally show a pic of the sun for 12 hours and a pic of the moon for 12 hours, simply indicating day/night. A true moonphase is just that, displays different phases of the moon.

To add just a bit more to what Paulopiper said, that means a moonphase wheel takes about 29.5 days to go around once, and a day night indicator does it in 1 day. Since moonphases are generally more expensive, some watches choose to style a day/night indicator to look like a moonphase.

Oh right! I was mistaken above when I said the moonphase wheel goes around every 29.5 days. Most use two pics of the moon and go around once every 59 days! Thanks for the great diagrams/pics.

Re: Difference between MoonPhase and AM/PM indicator?

A true Moonphase will, as the name implies, show the phase of the moon on any given day whereas an am/pm indicator will often just flip between an image of the Sun to show am and one of the Moon to indicate pm each day.

Re: Difference between MoonPhase and AM/PM indicator?

If what you're really asking is how to distinguish between the two visually, a true moonphase will have two circles on the disk, and the phase of the moon will be indicated by the circle being obscured by the cutout on the dial.

In constrast, an AM/PM indicator typically has a crescent moon and a sun printed on the disk, as shown here.
