    Dive Watch for Father

    Hello everyone!

I am looking to get my dad a new watch for his birthday, and I need some help. He used to scuba dive (only in lakes), but has since stopped for health reasons. I don't ever remember him actually wearing a dive watch while diving, but he always wore a Citizen dive type watch as a daily beater.

His Citizen is pretty old and pretty beat up, so I would like to get him a new dive style watch, and I would like to get one with a mechanical movement. My dad NEVER takes off his watch, so it needs to be durable enough to handle anything from typing on the computer to hammering nails while building a new deck. It needs to be resistant to dust and sand, and water resistant enough to take in the shower, work in the rain, and go for an occasional swim in the lake (no more deep diving) almost every day.

I would love to get him an Omega Seamaster 300m because I know he has always wanted one, but I simply cannot afford it. I would like to keep the similar style and features as close as I can, though.

Here is a summary of my requirements:

    -Under 1000 USD
    -Mechanical Movement
-Durable (related to bumps and shocks)
-Sapphire Crystal (his current is mineral and is super scratched up)
-Water resistant for swimming and showering
    -Metal Bracelet
    -Screw down crown
-Easily serviceable by a local shop, or easy to send in for service every few years
-Preferably Swiss movement, but open to others if all other criteria are met

Here are two models that I was thinking about:

    -Tissot Seastar
    -Certina DS Action Diver

I appreciate opinions on these two models as well as any other suggestions you have!

    Thanks!

I have the previous DS Action Diver with the blue sunburst dial and the date in between 4 and 5. It has a ETA 2824-2 movement, so any decent watchmaker can service it. It is not my most expensive watch, nor my favorite watch, but it is my most complimented watch. My vote is for the Certina.

You have mentioned two Swatch Group dive watches: the Tissot and the Certina; however, you have overlooked Hamilton's Khaki Navy. And, it is my understanding that Hamilton may be issuing a blue dial version of the Khaki Navy later on this year.

What about a vintage diver? A 6309 Seiko turtle in nice pre-owned condition can be had for well bellow your budget, and as a former diver he'll easily recognize it. I know I'd be buying that for my dad.

I did look at the Hamilton Scuba, but I read it wears pretty small at 40mm, and my dad has faifly large wrists. His current watch is 41, which looks small, but still good, so I wouldn't want to go smaller.
