Just 5 minutes ago I had a revelation. I wound my Japanese-made Orient EM78 last night at around 9pm and checked it against a Miyota-powered quartz at 4pm. Since then it has gained 2.5s. In fact after 12 hours stored crown down it had gained only 1s. But after checking the actual time against time.is I realised both watches were out by about 30s. How to setup the EM78? It can't backhack as it is fully wound (after conscientious brandy-swirling).
Forget all about the pesky second hand and set the minute hand to the correct time.
Now I have no need to look at the second hand at all.
