    Question Domed vs flat crystal

Is there some advantage of one over the other or is it just aesthetics?

    Advantages:
    - Flat crystals turn into a mirror under water, and domed crystals do not,
    - Dome crystals look nicer,
    - Domed crystals don't concentrate light for reflection, but refracts it wider to make the dial more visible.

In a very few applications a dome could be of benefit from the shape. For most of us the choice comes down to what looks better. And yes some designs look better with a flat crystal and others look better with a dome.

My understanding is that a dome crystal is also more difficult to shatter if hit straight on.

I like "curved" crystals, but I don't like the old fashioned "domes" that you find on vintage/older watches. I prefer a curved crystal to not go far past (if at all) the bezel. Such that the bezel is raised somewhat to give more protection. Especially with acrylic crystals.

Curved ones don't reflect light in the annoying way that flat crystals do, and they tend to hide scratches better.

If it's a mineral crystal, it doesn't need to be quite as protected. But if it's acrylic, I prefer the bezel to give more protection.

I prefer how "domes" (curved) look, but I also like the protection of a flat/recessed crystal as well.

I think domed crystals, whether mineral, sapphire, or acrylic, just look much nicer and add some visual interest to the watch.

Thanks! Now only if it were mine...lol.

I've got a Campanola for people who can't afford the real thing though, a Citizen Signature Grand Complication. It'll arrive next week. Very excited.

Also a nice watch...post pics when it arrives. I've seen it and it's a tempting watch.
