I have decided I need (want) a dress watch to round out my collection (for now). I have looked at many dress watches in forums and in ads and have decided any new (or recent) dress watch of any horological significance is more money that I care to spend. I think the only way to get a watch that not only looks good, but is interesting is to get an older watch. I am looking to spend less than $1000 and hopefully less that that. Is this possible? Do you guys have any suggestions?
I don't even know where I would start. I would imagine Ebay, but that seems like a dangerous proposition to me. Most of the watches on the sales forum are new watches that someone wore once and is now flipping.
I guess the other option is to find a real piece of crap and have it restored, but that seems like a lot of trouble.
The days of finding underpriced gems is over due to the internet, i suppose.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
