"Some day I'm going to buy a real wristwatch"
"When I only had one watch I always knew what time it was, but now I'm no longer sure"
If it was stolen in Toronto, it's likely no longer even in the country. It's either already in China, or melted down if it was a PM watch.
If it was stolen in a US city, you'd actually have a better hope for recovering it.
While TO certainly has "big city" crime, it's crime scene is much more organized towards international fencing, even at the petty street level versus the "I'm gunna pawn this here folex for crack money" seen in US cities.
Sad news, sorry for the guy :(

Wife: Don't you have enough watches?
Me: Don't you have enough earrings?
Wife: So, you're saying that watches are jewelry for Men?
Me: That's exactly what I'm saying.
Wife: Let's go shopping.
And that's how I got my last watch...
More a reflection of replacement value, rather than a currency conversion. However, CDN$ is tracking low compared to 4-5 years ago.
I'm assuming the guy had homeowners / renters type insurance, or possibly an umbrella policy, as you would reasonably expect anyone with such means. And it is reasonable to assume that there will be no downside from at least attempting a claim. So, declaring max value is expected. Especially so considering people need to see a headline in the news.

After thinking about it I would leave it in the glove box of my car before i would a locker like that.
The lesson here is to NOT wear your watch to the gym, spa, etc. I know at least a couple of people who had their high dollar watches stolen from their locker at their gym/racquet club. This is a more common occurrence than you might think. There are trolls shopping for a customer to steal from everywhere. If you feel the need to remove your watch then leave it at home. I have locked my watch in the trunk of my vehicle instead of wearing it into the gym.
Before you think about buying a watch winder from Wolf Designs ask me why you should not.
I have to stop saying, " How stupid can you be?" Too many people are taking it as a challenge.
