There are a few posts on here of late which have discussed watch values and the level of comfort an owner has whilst wearing high cost pieces. So, purely out of interest, has anyone had the unfortunate experience of being parted from their watch? Are you targeted or was it just bad luck?
I was definitely targeted - 4 years ago in Barcelona I had a watch 'lifted' from my person in a public street. It was incredible, the guy had a double clasp Breitling Superocean Heritage off my wrist in less than a couple of seconds - I didn't even feel it - until the weight had gone. I was fortunate enough to notice instantly and managed to trap the guy between two parked cars and a wall - and subsequently 'liberated' my watch. I was more concerned about his friends a couple of hundred feet down the road seeing what was going on, so unfortunately didn't get the opportunity to 'thank' him properly. In hindsight, I'm surprised he didn't just throw the watch to distract me.
I was fortunate to get my watch back, but the experience has made me a little more careful. My watches are all insured, but it's a crappy experience - so these days I'm a little more considered in terms of where I wear higher value watches.
Raids on Swiss watch stores in London are now common place, and the number of people being mugged for their high value timepieces is a regular occurrence and on the increase - so I wouldn't be walking about with a Rolex - the thieves seem to have some knowledge of watch brands, perhaps due to social media / rap videos / the Kartrashians etc etc.
