Ever just given away a watch?

I don't have a collection of nice watches like some of you undoubtedly do, but every once in a while someone will ask what time it is, and I'll ask if they have a watch. If they don't, I give them the watch I'm wearing, as long as it isn't a really expensive one or one that I wear a whole bunch. Not very often, but it happens.

Re: Ever just given away a watch?

I do it all the time... I've never sold a watch from my collection so it's the only way my collection shrinks. When I find a family member or good friend who doesn't have a watch, I'll ask if they would like one and I'll give them one I think they will like. Sometimes they do and they start wearing it regularly. Sometimes they don't.

I find older family members really appreciate a vintage Longines or GP... they even love winders. Younger folks with no WIS in them seem to appreciate quartz.

I don't think I've ever given away a watch that cost more than $200... but I (almost) never buy new and $200 goes a long long way in the vintage market. Many were probably bought for less than $75.... of course I always service my mechanicals when I get them so I often have $150+ tied up in the watch.

I did this for one cousin and he returned with an heirloom Hamilton my late uncle had been given upon graduation from high school... it was inscribed and the nice thing is we shared the same name. So it was inscribed with my name!

So giving can sometimes mean receiving.

But I don't think I have ever taken off the watch I was currently wearing and given it away on the spot ... sounds dramatic

Who is the company behind it? Why are they using this material?
People need to be able to identify the watch with themselves. It's based on emotion." - Ralph Furter

...that's just my opinion and I've been wrong before and will be again and might be now!

Sure... done it three times. I've never owned expensive watches, but the watches I've given away were not cheapies either. One was to somebody who got his first job and could not (yet!) afford a watch. I felt good about that.

I've given away watches to members here, as well as friends and relatives.

Yes. I had a female friend who kept wanting to wear whatever watch I had on at the time. Eventually, I just gave her one that I didn't see myself wearing again.

I don't have many to give but I let a few go to family members.

Yes, I gave one away here within the last several months. I have also given watches to all of my family members. I have also "sold" watches at huge discounts from market prices just to avoid the inevitable haggling over a used $200 watch.

Similar to Eeb, my collection goes down only when I give away to my family members.

Some stranger on the street, or some close family or friend?

I can see giving a watch to a family member or friend, but just someone who comes up to me for the time... definitely not.

Yep, done it with they guys who work for me the other day. I got the watch on a promotional deal. Not a bad watch and he needed it.
