Favorite Independent (and Ideally Direct) Watchmakers

I'm looking to add a watch to my collection (such as it is), and I'd like to buy a watch from a smaller producer. I like the idea of buying direct in part to avoiding the retail mark-up but mostly to support these companies.

I've been looking at a few including Boschett and Lum-Tec, but would like to know what other people have found that I should consider. I'm leaning more towards a diver or a clean looking pilot.

    Thanks,

    Tim

Damasko, Benarus and Armida for dive watches. Armida has a new model the A5.

Stowa/Jorg Schauer and Dornblueth for me. I do not own a Dornblueth but every single model they offer is gorgeous and every picture I have seen proves that they are gorgeous. Though they are a tad on the expensive side however. I would love to own one someday. There are very few brands that I would wear 99% of the models they offer, and both of these I would.

Of some of the smaller brands like you mentioned I have a friend who has a Bernhardt that was nice, especially considering what it cost.

If you want a diver I would recommend the Stowa Seatime or Prodiver models. Not too expensive and very good quality.

If we're talking about micromanufacturers, right now I'd say Nomos. Very impressed with their design. As I understand it, they're legitimately indy.

If we're talking "dream big or go home", sure, then I'd plump for Heritage Watch Manufactory, Maitres du Temps, Roger W. Smith, F.P. Journe, Kari Voutilainen, Philippe Dufour, Lang & Heyne and Christophe Claret

It was not at all what I had in mind, but I REALLY like the Nomos Club Automat. Great looking piece.

Most of the micro brands such as Boschett that sell directly are not "watchmakers" and certainly not "manufacturers".
They are brands that contract everything out.

    Tragic:

Good point. I'm interested in them all the same. Maybe designers is a better way to describe (some of) them. Assemblers. It's an interesting field in that respect.
