Question First Luxury Watch - Help Me Help My Brother

Here's another one of these, but it's not for me, it's for my brother.

As he is moving up the ladder and getting more into watches he is shopping for his first luxury watch. He is not starting a collection, he wants one nice piece (he has other "lesser" watches). This purchase is 9-12 months away

    Criteria:
    Arabic numerals (non-negotiable) - minimum of 3-6-9
38-41 mm (he liked the size of the OP 36 too), wrist is 6.5-6.75ish
    Automatic
likes Chrono and GMTs, 3-handers ok (day and/or date good)
can be dressy or sporty, looking for reasonable versatility though

Isn't concerned with prestige but wants something known/iconic with brand longevity (not interested in micros)

Budget is up to around $5K USD

He was all in on the MB Geosphere but feels like maybe the $5K could be better spent elsewhere

    Thanks in advance
    Current:
Omega, Hamilton, Seiko x2, Orient, Suunto, G-Shock

    Coming Soon:
    Oak & Oscar

Does it have to be new? He can squeak into a Rolex Explorer at that price.

Otherwise, I think the the PO comes in a 3-6-9 variety.

Great question, no. Pre-owned is fine provided it is in good shape and all that.

He really likes the OMEGA Speedmaster 324.30.38.40.06.001 (38 mm with Arabic numerals)

Something not yet mentioned is if it can fit under a shirt cuff that's a big plus

THIS!! You could add a IWC Pilot to the mix

As the owner of an IWC Pilot, my money would go on a second hand explorer

Nomos Tangente 38 Datum for a versatile work watch, Nomos Ahoi Atlantik (40mm, sportier and water resistant), Rolex Explorer (preowned 39mm are in that range), Omega Planet Ocean 42mm variants, Tudor Heritage Ranger, JLC Master Control (date, no date, sector dial), Oris Big Crown Pointer Date, Longines Legend Diver.

I’m partial to Nomos in that price range but lucky for him there are a lot of options with Arabic numerals in that size and price.
That watch really tied the room together.

Re: First Luxury Watch - Help Me Help My Brother

Hi everyone, I'm the brother. I have a bit of a processing issue with numbers (like below average short term memory for numbers, I'm good at math, but I can't do anything in my head) as a result I have to actively think about what numbers are in which position. My Orient Worldtimer (no numbers) requires me to actively think about the time, if I look at one of my watches with a full compliment of Arabic numerals I can read the time as quickly as a digital watch. I'd settle for a setup like a Rolex Explorer but would prefer it to have almost all of the numbers and that's too much money to "settle"

I have an older Fortis Cosmonaut watch with day/date and like it a lot, but no one as ever heard of it and I'm tired of explaining to people why it's cool. I want something with a little more name recognition and that my kids will be fighting over when I die.

Pre-owned is great, I'm happy to let someone else take the depreciation hit. As my brother mentioned, I've been looking at the MB but I think i'd rather wait until I can get one used at a better price. I've been looking at some of the older 38 and 39mm Speedmasters with numbers and I will look through the suggestions you have all provided.

    Thanks everyone.

As presented regarding your processing issue, I have to lean towards pilots watches; and the IWC XVIII suggested above is a good suggestion. I particularly like the blue faced Le Petit Prince version. I would do also like to check out an Antoine de Saint Exupery version to see how the brown face looks.

To the numbers have to be "right side up" or can they be radial? I remember seeing this in a thread aways back and it stuck with me, not only because of the numerals but also because of the concentric ring guilloche pattern (Rolex Datejust 36)
