First Luxury Watch Purchase - Rolex Datejust vs. Cartier Santos

I'll be graduating from law school this year and am using the occasion to justify my first and probably only luxury watch purchase. I've narrowed my choices down to the two tone versions of the 36mm Rolex Datejust (oyster bracelet, white dial, baton numbering) and the medium Cartier Santos. Are there any objective criteria that would make one a better purchase over the other (besides the ~$1,000 price difference for the configurations I'm looking at)? Subjectively, I'm having a really hard time picking between the two. I've tried both on a few times at boutiques and am still not set on one over the other. Either way, I intend on it being my everyday/forever watch since I don't really swap my watches around, nor do I plan on starting a real collection.

    My primary concerns are:

    • Longevity - I'd like the watch to literally last me forever as I intend to wear it for years to come and eventually pass it down
    • Versatility - The watch will be worn daily with business formal/business casual work attire and ordinary street clothes
    • Maintenance - Does one require more upkeep? Is maintenance for one model substantially more costly?
    • Customer service - Since I intend to have the watch for so long, having good customer service for regular servicing, cleanings, etc is important to me
    • Comfort

    Thanks!

The DJ is a classic style.

The Santos has more modern lines (despite its history).

I personally prefer the Santos, of these 2 (the DJ, especially in TT, feels like an old man's watch).

Welcome aboard and congrats on you law school graduation.

Both are fine watches so you're the one who has to pick.

The Santos is a little more svelte on the wrist but you can't go wrong with a DJ. You have tried them both on?

If it were me I'd go with a single tone vs a two-tone model...for longevity. But again it comes down to personal choice.

First Luxury Watch Purchase - Rolex Datejust vs. Cartier Santos

Both are really great watches but the two-tone is going to be a statement. The Cartier two tone was (in)famously worn by Gordon Gekko, for example.

If you are looking for objective criteria, Rolex holds better value, is a dedicated watch company(whereas Cartier does other stuff), and has the better movement tested by decades of time. Cartier’s movement is relatively new. I think Rolex would win all categories presented by you, as it is a more versatile watch, better proven by time, and more comfortable thanks to the esteemed Rolex bracelet.

Did that bracelet become "esteemed" when it became solid?

The majority here will vote for the Rolex DateJust.

I am biased, because I love my Cartier Santos Medium.

I vote for the Cartier, because it has no date.

I love Rolexes, and the DateJust is a Watch that I have tried on before, but I dislike Watches with a date feature.
