First Rolex or..? Your opinions appreciated

    Hi all!

Would be looking to add my first Rolex to the collection this year. Iíve attached a photo of my current collection - Iím currently considering either a new Submariner, or a used Explorer 114270 (I have 6.5Ē wrists, though they are quite flat). I would also consider a OP34/OP36, but that would probably make my AT 2504.80 redundant. During the week I normally wear a button down shirt to the office, and hardly ever wear a suit anywhere - I might even put my AT on a croc strap to dress it up if I go for an OP or the Explorer. Iíd also be open to other suggestions from Rolex or other brands, I particularly like some of JLCís offering, although they are quite dressy for me. Thanks all!

Sub for me. You don't have a diver in your collection and the Sub is the undisputed champ in that space. Plus, at 40mm, it would work well in your wrist.

The sub would fit that collection very well, and it’s an icon
My collection changes so often I got tired of redoing my signature

Shop with an open mind. Plenty of choices in addition to Rolex. I've been collecting for years and don''t own a Rolex. I've shopped for my first Rolex on three occasions and ,each time, ended up with something else.

Have been leaning towards the sub myself, I always thought they were over hyped, but my father-in-law has one and every time we see him I canít take my eyes off of it! Will visit Laings and try some bits on. Iíve heard the sub is a bit chunky, would that be an issue for smaller wrists? And would the clasp be too large?

An Explorer would be a good move. Though an OP/Datejust in a light colored dial would let you keep your AT, and it would be a lot more affordable than an Explorer.

Do you have any suggestions? Have never shopped in this price range before - I like the idea of the 904L steel and the fact almost every part is made in house - Are there any other contenders under say $10k?

I love the 114270 and had one before. But now the prices are almost the same as a brand new Explorer, or even in some mint example cases, above that! Thats crazy and definitely not worth the money, despite how much I love it (I went for the newer version in the end when looking to buy another Explorer). Or for a 6.5" wrist, I would say look at the Explorer II Polar 16570 (older 40mm version).

Oh, and hello fellow Sotonian! Live in Hong Kong now, but Southampton born and raised.

If you even think you would want a Rolex, I say get it now or you'll always be thinking about it. And you have a natural fit in your collection for a Submarine, so double win!

Sub. The first diver in your collection, and who can argue with Rolex? Whether it's a 14060, 114060, Sea-Dweller would be a fun errand to go on and find a great specimen at a reasonable price.
Whether it's an OP or Sub, etc., go with your heart. And congrats, I'm excited for you!
