First watch - opinions please =]

I'm getting married in January and my future in-laws want to buy me a watch. i dont want them to have to spend a ton of money on it so i was looking at the 500-750ish price range. this will be my first watch aside from fashion watches (guess, armani, etc)

originally i wanted to get a vestal or nixon because i am a surfer from california, but after researching a bit i realized they are just fashion watches. i now want something a little more...."reputable" and something with higher quality and class.

ive been scouring the forums and looking for a "best bang for the buck" and just been reading up on different watches. i want to get a seiko ananta but they are a bit out of my price range. maybe someday.

i am pretty active outdoors and in the water so i'd like a durable waterproof watch and the divers seem to be a great fit.

i've narrowed it down to 2 watches:

Deep Blue Daynight T100-Diver with the tritium flat tubes

    or

    Christopher Ward C60 Trident

From the visual aspect, i like the Chris Ward but I like the tritium flat tubes of the Deep Blue.

Any thoughts or input would be appreciated!

Guys, can we please have a sticky with good watches in the 500 and 1000 dollar price range. There are like three requests daily for that. And there really aren't that many options for what's really outstanding.

You can look at boutique brands for that kinda thing. Just make sure it has an ETA 2824 movement, nothing from Miyota, and a sapphire crystal. The rest is secondary. You could also look at the classic Seiko Sumo in that price range. Definitely more classy than any of the boutique brands.

Boschett Ocean Mariner What a beauty. Has an ETA movement, quality micro brand, sapphire crystal, and a pretty tough diver. Name: 3oceanMariners2.jpg

Another option is the Seiko Sumo, a solid watch, the only downside is it has a mineral crystal, but it is still a great watch. Name: s_sbdc001a.jpg

Definitely Seiko Sumo of all those. It can be upgraded to a sapphire and will still be within the price range.

All that boutique stuff is nice but not really reputable. Seiko on the other hand might have a mall reputation to the uninitiated but in reality their watches are real highlights especially in relation to price. They are also one of the, if not the most fully vertically integrated watchmakers in the world. For a marriage watch you want something solid, I'd think. The boutique brands are nothing more than hyped up fashion watches. With a little hyperbole one might say you could as well get a Nixxon of Fossil. Seiko Sumo is serious stuff.

Or you could go a bit more conservative and get a Mido Commander COSC for that price. I don't cease to recommend it. Again, serious Swiss brand, iconic model in their line-up, excellent movement, waterproof (only to 50m but it really is unlike some where they say it is and then it isn't). Besides, you could actually wear that to the wedding. That is if the wedding is a formal affair. If it is a beach affair, even a dive watch will do. I find that quite charming actually. :)

I also think of the Boutique brands you chose decent brands and of the brands you chose good models. Of the two you suggested the CW C60 is clearly the nicer watch, which is reflected in the price, of course. I do like the one with the charcoal grey bezel a lot. That is a look that harks back to sun-bleached Rolex Submariners for which one pays $10k today, just to get a bleached out piece of alu. :) It has the sapphire Crystel and the ETA 2824 I was speaking of. Could be a go. But do look in-depth at the Sumo and Mido suggestions. You won't regret it.

Definitely Seiko divers for the win in this price range.

Between the Seiko and the Mido you got nothing to lose, Josh. Both are grade A choices that would make any proud. Perhaps for common prestige reasons you'd prefer a Swiss watch with COSC movement. Then the Mido is your first choice. I know of no other Swiss watch in that price class with these features.

But if you care more for specialist prestige than for recognition from the common man then the Seiko Sumo is as good an option. Read up a little on Seiko watches here and on the Sumo in particular. It is quite the cult watch enjoying a large following globally. The Mido on the other hand is more of a connoisseur's thing.

Quite handsome, if you ask me:

Of the two you originally mentioned, I'd go with Deep Blue. I have 3 of them and am in negotiations for a 4th :)

I've never come across a brand with so much value. The T100 tubes are amazingly bright as well when compared to my Luminox's and my friend's Marathon CSAR.

I will say though, you should really check out some of the micro brands that are popular in the dive watch forum right now such as:

    Benarus
    Helson
    Prometheus
    Zixen
    Armida
    BaliHa'i
    Boschett
    Dievas
    H2O
    Halios
    SAS
    Zenton

All these brands make watches in your price range that are extremely well made, unique, rare (small, limited production runs), and have top notch, personal customer service. Well worth a look.

I am liking the seiko sumos as a watch overall but I don't really like the lugs.... I like the styling of the c60 though. Man there are a lot of microbrands...I'll never be able to pick one!

What I like about the c60 is that it is a sub homage bc I'll prob never be able to own one....

Il be reading up in the diver section today too
