FOIS vs Tag Heuer Autavia (2017) vs 1964 carrera re-edition (CS3111)

    Good morning Gents

I was hoping you guys and gals could help me narrow down my search.

I'm looking to get my first luxury watch and have been looking at the 2017 moon watch speedmaster, the new re edition of the autavia and a CS3111 carrera.

Do any of you gents have any experience of these watches?

I'm not too fussed with the investment or anything like that I just want the piece to last as it will be my new everyday wear. I did go and try on the autavia and the FOIS and while they are lovely I felt the autavia had a slightly cheap feeling rotating bezel and is very thick. The FOIS is very nice albeit the brown leather strap feels a little underwhelming. Unfortunately I haven't been able to track down a cs3111 as of yet to try. Also what is the difference in quality between the cv and the cs lines of the re edition?

    Cheers
    Henri

They will wear very very differently in size and I think that should be your first consideration. Don't quote me but if not mistaken the Autavia is 42mm and tall, the FOIS is 40mm while the CS3111 is around 35 or 36mm.

I love the iconic Carrera looks and Heuer's historical association with racing but it's just too small for me (but would probably suit a smaller wrist well) while the Autavia is too bulky and I'd rather see a fixed tachymeter than a rotating 1-12 numbered bezel on a chrono.

The 40mm FOIS is the goldilocks size for me except for my dislike of the hands, wish they looked more like moonwatch hands.

Underwhelming straps are never a problem for me, straps are meant to be changed in my book.

Good thoughts above, what size are your wrists?

For me, Moonwatch, although a great piece with loads of history isnít super desirable in its modern form, I would be looking for a vintage piece or a LE like a CK2998 re-edition but that kicks things up a notch. I agree though, the sizing is pretty much perfect all around too.

Iím a sucker for the Autavia, but again, I like the non-standard issues like the Watches of Switzerland edition. Again, brings pricing up a bit. Iíve seen the standard Autavia on the bracelet & strap, recently Iíve become a strap guy but both options look good. Iím not super concerned with the height of a watch as long as it feels good, every wrist is different. It has classic looks and the 12 hour bezel would be a nice touch if you travel to different time zones at all.

I also agree, the 35mm CS3111 puts it on my discard list due to size. I have a 6-7/8Ē wrist and find it too small. It looks fantastic but I would have a hard time getting used to the size.

My choice, Autavia, then Moonwatch based on personal preference. Have you considered vintage pieces or pre-owned? Good luck with your decision, they would all meet your daily wear and long lasting criteria IMO.

Iíve included wrist shots of my Longines BigEye chronograph at 41mm and 14.5mm high and my vintage Wakmann chronograph which is 37mm and thin (which is the smallest I feel is right for me) so you have a gauge on size.

You can't go wrong with either. See which one you like more in terms of design and feel.

I like the Autavia reissue but isn't it almost 16mm thick?

You can't go wrong with the moonwatch and I think its pricing has settled. I've got my eye on the Tag too but feel price hasn't settled yet.

Difficult choice, I have tried the Autavia and besides the error in the dial printing (in particular the chrono minutes subdial) it's an astonishing piece...it's also very big and tall.

The FOIS is very nice at 39mm but comes without bracelet, that is a must for a Speedmaster IMO.

I have a CS3113 (like the 3111 but with rings) and I love it, of course you need to decide if 35mm is the right measure for you.

Re: FOIS vs Tag Heuer Autavia (2017) vs 1964 carrera re-edition (CS3111)

All are great watches, but for your first luxury watch — and as a Chronograph — I strongly recommend the Omega Speedmaster Pro, either the traditional Moonwatch or the First Omega in Space (FOiS).

The CS3111 1964 re-edition, is extremely cool, though small (35.5mm). However, as a first watch, you’d have to source a used one, and then it’d be ~15 years old. For a Chronograph, it could be in need of service, etc. The CS3111 uses a mechanical (manual wind) Lemania 1873, which is the same base movement as the Omega 1861 used in the Speedies. The CV2110/1/3 uses a modular automatic Chronograph, based on the ETA 2894. These are difficult to service, and frankly, a lower tier than the other three watches you are considering.

The Autavia uses TH’s new in-house automatic Chronograph movement. As another poster mentioned, it is very large and very thick — you need to have the wrist to support it.

The Omega is the Goldilocks, great size, not too thick, wears well on the wrist, has a ton of continuous history, looks great on any strap, or bracelet. And, you can easily source a new or gently used model.

    Good luck!

Just over 7" on a hot sweltering day and just under that when its cooler. So roughly same as yours:)

I have watches between 38mm (SARB) to 44mm (MM300, but wears more like 42). Lately I find myself favouring my 39-40mm watches most as I find this to be my personal sweetspot.

The FOIS is a strap monster so don’t be put off by the lack of bracelet. You can also buy a 1125 vintage bracelet for it.
