Going to Manila - could use some advice...

Actually, going to Pasay, just outside of Manila. I'd love it if anyone had any good suggestions on places to get a fair deal down there - really on any kind of watch - I like vintage and new alike. I had seen similar posts, but they looked a few years old, so I thought I'd try a new one in case info had changed. (If anyone had any recommendations on safe, affordable lodging near the airport for a family with three young boys, I'd appreciate that too!)

    Thanks,

Sounds like fun! I just came back from Manila, Hong Kong, Macau and Tokyo. In Manila I would give Mang Andy (Andoy/Andrew) at makati square. Bring a couple watches that needs to be revived. He is a well known watch maker in the Philippines. I had my Superocean buffed and refinished for about $25 on the spot. There's also a 2nd hand shop in Greenhills 2nd floor near the cell phone shops who has a wide variety of higher end pieces. There are a lot of seikos in the Philippines but I found it hard to find real gems that are not available in the states. I did buy a skx007 from a taxi driver for $40 which I later flipped.

Personally I would try my best to fly to Tokyo. This is the time to go to Japan as the Japanese yen dropped over 25% in just the past year. Everything is affordable and I found even cheaper than the other cities I visited. I was able to pick up a 14060M sub with box and papers for a great deal. There's tons of watch stores around Tokyo.

    Good luck and happy hunting!

Just avoid the resorts that have clubs in them! Not the best place for kids......

Resorts World Manila Hotel is across the street or highway from Terminal 3 NAIA (the sort of new Manila airport). It's pretty much brand new and I've heard good things about it. It also is part of a casino - although I guess that's a moot point since you are travelling with children. I'd stay there if I was only staying near the airport.

I was just there in June. As far as hotel accommodations go, we stayed at the Seda NUVALI which is an hour or so from the airport, but in a really beautiful area and a very nice hotel for the cost. There was lots of shopping right around there, but I found it to be mostly overpriced Western-style stuff at American prices, and no watch stores that I saw. Mine was not a vacation or sightseeing trip, but we did make it up to Tagaytay which was worth the drive. NUVALI is a nice area and is near the Monochrome, which is where my church's Manila campus is (the reason for my trip.). Enjoy!
