Good first watch recommendation? tag vs omega

Hi guys, I've been a lurker here for some time. I love watches but never had the funds to afford anything really nice. I decided to sell off my collection of watches to raise funds to buy 1 nice watch. I'd like to eventually buy 2 and one day give to my sons.. hey are 4 & 2 so i have some time.

I have budget about 2k. prefer to buy something used to stretch it out.

I found local Omega Planet Ocean 8500 for $2900 was hoping maybe to get for 2500 or Tag Carrera chrono 1887 for 2000. I'm open to suggestions as well. I'd like something that will age well and keep value.

Omega--generally better build, better movement and better resale value (if and/or when).

In my preference I would go for Omega. However I do love some Tag pieces as well, I've had less problems with Omega but haven't had a whole lot of problems with Tag either.

Good first watch recommendation? tag vs omega

I recommend Omega over TAG Heuer. Also, if you are stretching your budget for one, consider that it is often much more expensive to service a chronograph movement, like the TH 1887.

The TH 1887 movement has had some bad press, whether justified or not, that is part of the reason TAG Heuer has folks who do not like it as a brand.

I owned a TAG Heuer Carrera Auto Chronograph, but sold it, because I did not like servicing the modular chronograph movement.

The Omega 8500 with coaxial is intended to require servicing less often. However, with any used watch purchase, I recommend you look at when it was last serviced. If more than 4-5 years, you may have to budget in a future service.

Finally, since it is a thread about an Omega to “some day pass down to my son,” WUS rules require at least one person to recommend you just save a little more and get a Speedmaster Professional!

    Good luck!

I would go omega without a second thought, but the right answer is to buy whatever blows your hair back, that you're willing to service, and that you're not going to get sick of.

Good first watch recommendation? tag vs omega

Omegas are a great introduction to “nice” watches. I’ve had several. The Seamaster Professionals are nice and you can often find them for at or below $2K used. The Speedmaster Professionals are a WUS favorite and the Planet Oceans are on of my personal favorites. The 8500 was a little too thick of a case for me so I had a PO 2500 which cost me a little below $2500. The Speedmaster I bought was a 2009 and cost me a little below $3K.

While the Speedmaster is a classic the Planet Ocean will be cheaper to service and in the minds of many watch enthusiasts is also a classic just not as recognizable as the Speedmaster. The Speedmaster is beautiful but there have been people who have ruined their Speedmaster around water by accidentally pushing the pushers while the watch was under water. Since you noted you wish to condense your collection mostly down to one nice watch I recommend the Planet Ocean as it is often seen as a nice tool watch, is pretty durable and will work for most environments and situations.

Good luck with your decision OP. Tags are nice watches too but generally viewed as less luxurious than Omega.

all good suggestions! I'm open to speedmaster as well, but i guess i had it backwards i thought seamaster was the more prized line. @harry_flashman great point about service i was thinking about that after i posted this. I will look at speedmasters see whats available and even though Tag is "sexy" i'll move it down my list for now.
