Good Son's High School Graduation Watch

    Hello All,

What's your advice (and pic) of a good watch to give as graduation gift. With a max budget $1,000.00 had max.

    Son would be college bound.

    Thanks.

Only leaves a few thousand alternatives. :) Are we talking jock, business major, tech major, liberal arts? Jeans and t-shirt, preppy/polo, hoodie?

That's a tough price point, but you might want to look at a Seiko Premier, or the new Seiko Astron through a grey market seller. A Movado 800 might also be an option.

He is a casual kid, so looking at a sporty watch, he maybe in ROTC and something to last his lifetime.

Come on! He's a kid, for gosh sakes! Getting him a $1K watch is ludicrous!

After two years he won't even be able to find the darn thing, and if he can put his hands on it, it will be "skint" all to hell and back.

Do yourself a favor and give that GREATEST SON THAT EVER LIVED of yours a nice Casio G-Shock. It will serve him well as a time-keeping instrument, and during ROTC training (particularly if it has a compass feature), and will be tough enough to handle even the wildest of college parties.

However, if you insist on throwing away good money then, at least, spend it as smartly as possible and look at one of the Combat series from Lum-Tec:

    Lum Tec, LLC

Take, for example. the B23 Carbon .. it is light and comfortable, and RUGGED AS HELL, plus it has the following features:

    43mm width excluding crown
    22mm lug width
    12.5mm thick
Weight on leather strap: 74 gram/2.61oz
Carbon composite case with a titanium core and caseback
    200 meters/660 ft. water resistance
    LUM-TEC MDV Technology®
Ultra precision tuned 28,800 BPH Miyota 9015 Japan automatic movement with hand winding and hack feature
    Calendar
    Thick sapphire crystal
    Clear anti-reflective coating
    Threaded sapphire caseback
Screw-lock crown with double diamond sealing system
    High tech Viton® gaskets
Top grade studded leather strap included
    Molded rubber strap included
    1 year limited warranty
    Limited numbered series of 199
Free lifetime timing adjustments and pressure testing

Add to that list the fact that Lum-Tec sets the world standard for customer service and it's a no-brainer.

Oh, and I failed to mention that the lume is AWESOME!

Good luck with your ultimate choice!

Re: Good Son's High School Graduation Watch

I was very much into watches and took care of them when I went into college (12 years ago). I had myself a Fossil, Skagen and a G-shock.

The Fossil was stolen from the weight room, the Skagen didn't last very long after some abuse, but the G-shock I still have to this day and with its original battery.

My advice is that you should consider saving that money to buy him a watch after graduating college/university and not before. There are many dorm room thieves as well and many more situations involving abuse to a watch that we endure in those 4 years than after. Plus consider if he does ROTC.

Get him a G-shock or something tough and easy on the wallet (Seiko/Citizen come to mind). And after he's graduated get him something he can appreciate more and learn to take care of.

Longines or Christopher ward, go to there web sites, lots of choices for that price. If he's into diving or surfing you can try steinhart .

Also, check out a Citizen Nighthawk. I bought one in my second year of uni, and it served me very well at that time.
