gq shows you how to buy a watch

Thought this was interesting. Guide to buying a watch for the non-WIS crowd.

    http://men.style.com/gq/fashion/landing?id=content_5588

Note the watches identified as classics:

    Rolex Sub
    Omega Speedy Pro
    Cartier Santos
    Tag Heuer Monaco
    Movado Museum
    IWC Portuguese
    JLC Reverso
    AP Royal Oak

    Agree? Disagree?

“There’s a pyramid with around fifty top brands,” says Faber, “but at the very apex are only two: Patek Philippe and Rolex.”
Rolex one of the top two?

    I dunno about that...

I dunno I find this pretty sad there is really no need to express the fact that a murderer wore a rolex , and make it a buying point. or something to bring up at a dinner party in GQ's eyes.

If you want a real solid-gold watch (with matching bracelet), you’ll have to drop at least $20,000. Go much lower, and you’ll need to opt for a leather strap or a gold-plated watch (because the plate is typically only a millimeter or two thick, it’s only a matter of time before you’re left with plain old stainless steel).
LOL, the gold plating is "a few millimeters" thick! Hey, what's a few orders of magnitude among friends....

Sounds like good criteria for a woman, too.

The chap didn't specify the criteria for being top of the pyramid. In terms of absolute, no-expense-spared quality, no - probably not. In terms of desirability - sure. Even if you hate Rolex with the sort of passion that should really be reserved for suicide bombers and child rapists, you cannot argue with the supply/demand balance Rolex has set up for itself and the desirability of the brand.

Even in terms of desirability, there are more than two at the top of the pyramid.

I would say that in terms of brand recognition by others (ie everybody who sees the watch will know its expensive, not just you) those two are on top. But, in my humble opinion, that's pretty shallow criteria for saying they are on top of the quality pyramid.

And, I am of the opinion that Rolex does make a good durable watch, but so do some others.

When I think who the average GQ reader is, I expect writing that Rolex is one of the top two watch brands is a very safe statement. I'm sure the same crowd had "Members Only" as one of the top two brands in the 80s

Re: gq shows you how to buy a watch

Being very new to the watch scene I'm sure there are dozens of astronomically priced watches I will never own at the top of the pyramid. That being said, even before I was a "WIS in training" I would have said that the top two would be Patek and JLC, not Rolex.

Frankly I think that Rolex's name has been seriously damaged by the giant number of fakes that have been done over the decades. It's to the point where if I see someone wearing a Rolex, I usually assume it is fake, not the real thing.
