Hamilton Khaki hour hand alignment issue?

I've had this Hamilton Khaki Auto 40mm for about 5 days. I noticed that the hour hand doesn't line up properly. This my first automatic watch ever. Is this typical for automatics? Would this be an issue that could be fixed under warranty?

In this pic, the hour hand should be directly between the 10 and 11 when the minute hand is at 30.

Here, the hour hand is not properly lined up until about 2 minutes past 30.

Would there be any way to correct this myself?

It's just a misaligned hands. Generally uncommon but not unheard of and it sometimes happens to watches costing several thousand dollars. The machine used to assemble the watch probably installed it a bit off. You can fix it yourself but it would require opening up the watch, removing the movement and dial, and resetting the hands. A good watchmaker can have it fixed for you in 10 minutes.

If it is only 5 days old, I would return it. Definitely don't start tinkering on it yourself if you are not experienced with this.

+1. Don't mess with warranty if you don't have to.

If the watch shows no signs of wear, just return or exchange it. If it shows any signs of wear, you may be forced into a warranty situation if you don't want to deal with the misalignment. This depends on the seller's policy.

If you crack the caseback or anyone else that is not the warranty source does, (AD or Gray Market Source) you will void the warranty and be left to pay for a fix on your own.

I wouldn't be upset over the hour hand being a mm off.

I bought it directly from Hamilton, so I have their 2-year warranty. Is there an certain tolerance the watch should meet regarding the hands being aligned? It should always be exact right?

I'm also curious if this might correct itself. Is there a break in period for the watch? I checked the alignment at 1 pm and it seems closer to what it should be.

If its misaligned from the start, no way will it magically correct itself. But first check that it's really misaligned and not an optical illusion (look directly straight ahead as possible with your one dominant eye only). It could also be the dial markings being slightly off instead of the hands. Check again by setting the hands at 12 o'clock sharp, (this is the most revealing position and the position a watchmaker would set the hands when fitting) and also try 3, 6 and 9 o'clock positions to confirm your conclusion of mis-aligned hands is correct.

Take it back to the authorized dealer for a replacement. Don't bother with a repair.

However, an easier check for alignment is done on the hour. 6:00 should be completely vertical.
