Have You Ever Been to SIHH or Baselworld?

So the title speaks for itself. Have you ever been to either of the quintessential trade shows (SIHH or Baselworld)? Is it difficult to get tickets? Would you urge a watch nut go experience either? If so, which one would you recommend?

I suppose that I'm asking because I've been thinking for quite a while now that it would be nice to attend one of the trade shows and want to plan well in advance.

I haven't been. Personally, after this write up by Dan Henry I'm not sure I would bother making a special trip of it. If I was in the area when it was on im sure I would pop in though ,.

My wife has been to Basel. She thought it was a great experience but doesn’t have the fine appreciation for watches that I do, although she has pretty good knowledge. She was there for work though, not as a visitor. I am hoping to tag along to one of the shows one year when my kids are older.

SIHH & Basel are not targeting us the consumers, but business and journalists; so whats the point if you can't get to try on the watch.

From the bits I've read by various forum members who've been, you'll be wasting your time and money. Baselworld is not for the plebs with sticky fingers breathing on windows (no offence). Access to anything is very restricted unless you're known in the industry...

In any event (pun intended) it would seem that Baselworld is likely to go the way of the dinosaur. SIHH is by invitation only for retailers...

Never been, never will--zero interest in trade/hype shows of any type.

Been to Baselworld last year. Cool to go once, it's like the world's most luxurious shopping mall, the stand design alone is worth looking at (if you like design in general).

    But then:

Yeah, they have a lot more fun there.

On the other hand, if you pop over to the independents (Ateliers section?) or the AHCI booth, you can exchange a few words with some of the living legends of watchmaking, - if it doesn't intimidate you (it had that effect on me, since I was unprepared). I did get to put a 70k$ watch on my wrist - just because it was lying there very casually - and that puts some things in perspective.

I don't think I'll go again unless I have something specific in mind, like good questions to the watchmakers, or perhaps for a purchase, or if I'm somehow invited at some point. I would like to drop by SIHH, though basel is a much nicer city to visit than Geneva, imo.

Yes, I have been! It was cool, but in reality a large waste of money. I tried getting into Rolex but the well dressed ladies would not let me through the door. On floor 2 I had better luck (smaller guys).
