Help! Fortis or Ball? (Lower ends)

Hey guys I'm looking for some help in choosing a watch under $1,000

Although I do like Hamiltons and Tissots, I think I'd preferr the lower end of a higher watch company.

    I'm currently looking at the

Ball Watch Fireman (Automatic, 40mm stainless steel)
    Ball Watch Engineer Series

    or

    Fortis B-42 Flieger Day/Date (645.10.12)
    Fortis B-42 Pilot Professional Day/Date (645.10.11)
    Fortis Flieger Automatic
    Fortis Spacematic Day/Date
    Fortis Cosmonaut Day?Date Bracelet (610.22.11)

I'm hoping to take this purchase with me to school, and have it be memorable everytime i look down at my wrist. But since i wasn't able to find too much information about the Fortis or the Ball watches, I'm not sure if its truly worth it to buy lower ends of expensive watches.

I like the Fortis for its durable look, it looks like a everyday watch that i can take everywhere. I'm also a little biased towards Swiss watches for no apparent reason. But the Ball watches have recently moved under my radar as well. I don't mind Rubber, Leather strap, but i would preferr the bracelet.

I've looked all over the internet but of all the places i think I'd apprecaite the opinions of people of this forum the most. So any kind of help would be appreciated...thank you very much for reading my post in the first place

Re: Help! Fortis or Ball? (Lower ends)

I don't own a Fortis, although I have looked at them and they're a damn fine watch, but I am delighted with my 40 mm Ball Fireman, to an extent that surprised me. I got it as a relatively inexpensive travel watch (because it uses a gaseous tritium light source, GTLS) to wear on business trips; and now I find it spends a disproportionate amount of time on my wrist in the office, and the lab, and socially.

It is a very nicely built timepiece, and I love the the way it looks when wearing it. And this watch is the only one I wear from my collection that draws any comment from non-WIS colleagues. The design, seen in photos, is subtle and perhaps almost bland, but on-the-wrist it has a surprising amount of presence.

It has to be your choice, DHoops, and you really need to try your selection on to make a valid choice. But I can tell you my Ball is accurate, reliable, robust, well made and good looking. And the GTLS is very definitely a big advantage (why don't high end watch companies adopt this system?). There's an element of geek-factor in GTLS too, when you start explaining to your friends about beta-emitters and the excitation of outer-shell electrons in a phosphor, and the fact that tritium is used in hydrogen bombs, and so on...

Permit me to post a shot of my Fireman on a Morellato strap:

Great choice! You'll have to post a pic when it arrives, of course!

    hi,

I agree with the comments on the Ball Fireman. I have the same one on a bracelet though and I am very pleased with the quality of the watch.
    Good luck on the Engineer.

yes, i think you made a great decision. i have heard quite a few stories about fortis having some quality control issues. especially where it concerns their crowns. may have just been one model and a certain batch. but because of all the stories i have heard i don't know that i would be comfortable buying one right now. i will say that the fortis watches i have seen imperson are very impressive. massive watches that seem to be put together very well. but i have also heard the same about Ball and everyone who has owned one has spoken very highly about them. i was actually considering getting one myself recently but just can't afford it right now. great designs. i love the idea of the tritium tubes and the lume not having to be charged up. i am sure i will get one one day.

I´d personally go for a Ball Engineer if you like those Tritium tubes all around the dial.

The case and bracelet is GREAT
