    Sticky ... rubber ... ball

Edit: one with a smooth surface that grips, not one with a rough or textured finish. Look for one that is squishy with a smooth glossy surface. A raquetball, for example, never works for me. It is squishy, but textured. I actually use the air puffer that came with my watch repair kit...you just have to cover the blow hole so it keeps air in it.

Why do you want to open it?

Bummer, if the grease has evaporated, it might be a tough job even with the proper tool.

These dials have lots of cool character but – unbreakable mainspring – usually means a Baumgartner movement or equivalent. Here’s a foolproof way to get a caseback off if the squash ball method fails.

If that’s a bit drastic, swing by watchmaker. They may do it for free.

Very interesting and unique technique. I would probably try a watchmaker first and use the nut only if all else fails (and even then would be reluctant to do so).

It looks to be a snapback case made to look like a screwback, but the sloped surfaces would give no surface for a screwback tool to work on.

Check around the circumference where the caseback meets the case for a thin gap to allow a snapback knife to fit.
