Question I need help with an eBay auction that I won

    Hi All,

If I ever needed help it is now.

I know there are many watch experts frequenting this forum, and would like an opinion.

I am the winner of this vintage elgin watch on eBay, and was thinking it might be too cheap.

Please let me know what you think? (The link to this now ended auction is below)

ELGIN Vintage Rare Automatic Swiss Made Watch with Date MINT | eBay

    Is it the real deal?

I post the sellers pic of the watch below too.

    Thank you

If that's a hundred years old my granny is John Wayne.

Edit: I wouldn't buy from India, too many redials and frankens but that's just me.

They have received some terrible feedback as well.

I saw that, I just assumed he was using a template with the amount of items he has sold and forgotten to change it.

Sloppy though and I also don't think the watch is very original.

Well you've taken a bit of a risk there. I'd be reluctant to buy a watch from India and even more reluctant to buy a vintage watch without a pic of the movement. Even so it looks quite nice, better than the usual Indian redials and if the movement turns out to be original and in good order then I think you've done ok, even factoring in a service. You won't know the full story until you get it. Of course it's more like 50 years, I don't know where the seller plucked 1901 from.

Hi. In the future you should ask about watches before bidding not after the auction closes. You will protect both youself and the seller.

The watch is probably late 1960's or 1970's swiss made Elgin branded watch. The american watch makers had all ceased production by the time this watch was made. It uses a mechanical not quartz movement. The watch is far from mint with the top side appearing to have been heavily buffed. The crown appears to have been replaced and I suspect the dial was redone. Difficult to tell for sure about condition cause the pictures are not sharp. Seller has poor feedback and appears to deal mostly in inexpensive stuff like pens, etc.

It looks very obviously like something from the 60s or 70s. Absolutely nothing about it says 1901 in any way shape or form, and that plus the fact that there are no pictures of the movement should have set the alarm bells ringing. Watches from India are notorious for having repainted dials, franken parts inside and whatever. So no, it isn't 'The real deal'. But the question is though did you buy it for it's supposed antique age, or did you buy it because you liked the style of it? You might be better off returning it on the grounds it isn't what the seller said it was, and then looking for a more authentic Elgin watch from another seller.

This is the only hobby/collector forum I've ever been on where people buy stuff on ebay before asking for opinions or doing research.
